Subject: | Re: Those darned main gear fairings and wheel pants |
Mike,
I had a wooden box-like cradle that I used to support the main fuselage
while I worked on it that I used along with a floor jack to raise the
fuselage off of the floor. This along with a telescoping tail stand
allowed me to set the tail hight then jack the front up until I had the
proper angle. Once in place I took two pieces of 1"x 2" and screwed them
to the outboard sides of the cradle. I kept the jack under the cradle as
a safety precaution. This gave me a stable tripod and all the room
needed to snap the line on the floor, make measurements to the wheel
pants and enough room to work around the main gear legs safely.
Hope this helps.
Dave

Pascal,
I wouldn't worry about it much, lots of people have put it in the stock l

Brian;
you're right there is a place for this, but as a group who share a
common aircraft I find it fine to allow us to express our thoughts
especially in this case. I too served and quite understand what Rick is
saying, he was just sharing his thoughts and I find that more than
acceptable when one understands what is behind it all.

Sorry for my rant, there are few things I am passionate about and that was

So Brian...I apologize, speak away...that's what makes us a great country.

We have a hooting noise when heat is selected to the cabin. Sounds like

Removal of the owl nesting in the cowl removed the noise. Sorry, I just
couldn't let that one go by. My bad!!!! :-P

If I had to guess, it sounds like there is enough velocity in the duct to whistle
between some openings. Might also be as simple as a piece of tape or a tail
on the SCAT that is acting like a reed.

Works great, I have a slight up hill into the hanger and a lip in the
hanger. Doesn't fit right with the fairing on the nose wheel, so I have a
little bit of work to do on it to make it work a little better.

If you are so inclined to make your own (you built an airplane after all :-D)
the April 2005 Kitplanes had an article on a DIY powered tow bar made from various

I purchased a cool (used) EZGO dump bed golf cart (gas model) used for
golf course maintenance work. It has a towing hook up on both the front
& rear of the frame. I plan to use that to move my -10. Because there is
a hook up in front I can look at the plane as I move it around. I will
have to fabricate the tow mechanism but that should not be an issue. For
about the same price as the prebuilt ones I also have an airport get
around cart and a good training cart to teach my daughter how to drive.

Sheldon,
I've been considering the same thing. I have an incline, and my hangar
faces in a direction that causes me to have about .5-1" of ice in front
of my hangar lots of times in the winter. I barely made it in alone
last weekend. So I was thinking something like this with a winter
studded tire would help.
http://store.wagaero.com/product_info.php?products_id=14093
They're here in-state, besides...
I did consider pulling it in tail first with a winch, and even have
a mount on the floor where I could attach it. But, I just don't like
the idea of pulling on that tail eyelet at the angle it would take to
pull it in. That bulkhead would hold up to a lot of down force, but I'm
not sure how many pounds of rearward pull it can take. I was thinking
of calling Van's on it. If I just had a way to pull about 15' of
cable in with a winch, a pushbutton operated winch would be dirt
cheap and work perfectly for me, and then I wouldn't even have to
worry about studded tires. Let me know what you dig up.

Us Grumman drivers have the same problem ..... and the solution is to
loop a rope around the steps to make a bridle and tow with a winch. An
electric boat winch works real good ..... or even a Harbor Freight winch.

Another inexpensive option is to buy a used riding mower and use it as a
tug. You can get them cheap because you don't need one that actually mows.
I tried chains on my tug in MN and found out that it tears up the cement
after a years worth of use. I went back to no chains.

Good comments from everyone. I guess I was asleep last year when this was d
iscussed. I read about Matts air-ball but since the stock tubing is straigh
t before and after the flow sensor I thought it applied to a non-stock conf
iguration.
The only reason I had the electrical fuel pump on in cruise was to test the
condition with the autopilot on so I could focus on the abnormality.
It would seem that any modification or relocation of the fuel flow sensor c
ould upset the calibration - so it must be recalibrated after the final con
figuration is in place. It is very important to me that this value is corre
ct since it is the basis of many calculations - reserve fuel at destination
, horsepower, miles per gallon, and prop efficiency.
Thanks all-

Bill,
While I do see the increase in fuel flow, just like you do, with
mine installed in the stock location, it doesn't cause me any
headaches. I only use the fuel boost for maybe 60 seconds
during takeoff, and even on landing if I do, it's only for
about 60 seconds again....just that timeframe that I'm under
about 500' AGL. If you only use it a couple minutes during
the flight, it won't change those readings much at all. I've
consistently been accurate to within about .1-.2 gallons
over a 40-45 gallon flight, so it's just not worth worrying
about. In over 400 hours I've never had a fuel fillup that
had any noticeable amount of difference over what the totalizer
told me I should be adding.
If you're going to use it for HP, and things like that, yeah,
you'll get a little mis-reading for those few seconds that
you use it.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you want to leave the thing on all
the time, and then you'd have other problems to contend with.
