Subpanel photo attached... The AOA CPU is in the lower left hand corner. The AL angles used were 1"x1" (trimmed one side) as the AOA screw holes didn't line up to be able to use 3/4 x 3/4 angle without cutting yet another subpanel hole. Subject: Voyager Flight Planning Software
Hey all - Just thought I'd give a bit of a pirep here. I know it's been discussed before, but the Voyager flight planning software from Seattle Avionics is WAAAY COOL. I downloaded the "Freeflight" version and activated the trial of the more comprehensive features, and I'm sold. It made planning a kind of tough flight much easier. The weather tools are exceptional, and in no time I was happily planning away. The little video tutorials are invaluable to get started, and once you get the hang of it, it's great. Scott from Seattle avionics actually called and chatted with me about the software, and was really helpful as well. BTW, I'm also using it on a Mac running Parallels, and it runs perfectly. Also, I thought I'd bring up another thing. I'm a bit of a gadget nut, and I've picked up a couple cool weather and flight planning tools along the way here, and I'm just really happy to be flying in this age where you have the tools to really know what the weather is doing everywhere. It's come a long way even from when I started flying just 4 years ago. I've had the experience of sitting in a cessna cockpit at night on some lonely airfield on the phone with flight service trying to find a way to get home (or close to it) when everywhere around seemed to be below approach minimums. I just felt blind and dumb. Now, I've got excellent weather tools on my Iphone that allow me to have an pretty good understanding of the big picture. Couple that with datalink weather in the cockpit on an EFIS or handheld, and you're even better informed. Add to that the flight planning weather tools in most of the software available, and you really get a clear view. The last and I think most important part of all of this is to have a really clear definition of your personal minimums, both for IFR and VFR flying, and stick to them when making the "go, no-go" decision. I've made mistakes on this last part a couple times, and the best thing I can say about that is that I learned from them. I'm rambling a bit now, so I'll sign off! also - a belated happy new year to everyone! cj

For free flight planning software, IMHO, Golden Eagle Flight Prep SE gives you more and uses less computer resources. Haven't compared the pay services, because that would invalidate my CSOB status. ;-) Chris Johnston wrote: > > Hey all - > > Just thought I'd give a bit of a pirep here. Subject: Engine Install - helpful hint - balance beam
From: "AirMike" <Mikeabel@Pacbell.net>
Having seen 3 grown men struggling to install the engine with a hoist, I had anticipated a few problems doing the great deed. I used the typical engine hoist borrowed from EAA Chapter 1073 (thank you verrrry much). But I also used the balance beam that was at the chapter along with the hoist. This enabled us to shoehorn the engine into the "ears" Verrry easily. We married the upper ears to the airframe first and then rolled the balance beam to drop the front of the engine and the lower ears just joined up with no effort at all. Try to get the pic attached :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D -------- OSH '08 or Bust (busted) be there in "09 Q/B Kit - wiring and FWF Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=225948#225948 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/p1201217_205.jpg

From: "AirMike" <Mikeabel@Pacbell.net>
As you can see from the prior post - I have installed my engine on the airframe. Should I fit the cowl (upper & lower) now or is it best to do the baffling first for a better fit? Or does the baffling get in the way of the cowl fitting job? -------- OSH '08 or Bust (busted) be there in "09 Q/B Kit - wiring and FWF Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=225949#225949

Fit the cowl first...make sure you get the nose ring as close to 13" ROUND as possible first them slip the top over the bottom cowl and start your work on the horizontal joint...work from the front back. Once you have the cowl done. Install the baffles,..put paper clips on the baffles and lower the top cowl down..the clips will slide down and give you a starting point to start cutting the baffles...once you get the clips to stay above the baffles by about 3/8" when the top cowl is in place you're good to go. Sounds easy but be ready for many ons and offs of the cowl and baffles for trimming...go slow... Mike, We usually fit the baffles first, but be prepared to trim the baffles to get the cowl to fit well. A couple other points: Fit the cowl so it initially sits about 1/8"-3/16" below the spinner. That way as the engine mounts break in and sag, the top of the cowl will end up flush with the spinner. That happens gradually over the first 50-100 hours, then pretty much stops. Don't worry about the gap between the spinner and the cowl closing up--just make that gap even, and the split line level. Give yourself plenty of clearance at the front inlet ramps. Mine is too tight, with about 1/8" between the ramps and the cowl. I haven't adjusted it yet, but it's on my list. Too tight here makes the lower cowl harder to remove. Think about angling the top of the rear baffle forward, like in the picture. That makes it a lot easier to lower the top cowl into place, and it might help sealing too. The sides seem to work out pretty well since the cowl approaches the baffles there at an angle, but the rear stands straight up and half the time the baffle tends to bend aft instead of forward. The angle makes it work right every time, and helps even without the big door.
