The 10 I purchased has the empennage and empacone completed but not joined together,
servo has been installed in one wing, Dynon heated pitot installed, wingtips
fitted and Archer antennae installed. The workmanship is excellent, I flew
out to Arizona to check out the kit. It comes with a Flightline a/c kit which
I probably won't be using, at least that is current thinking. I believe where
I will be starting is cabin/cabin top fiberglass, control sticks, floor areas.
I look forward to seeing the difference in plans between the 6 and 10.
I have the finish kit on order also, not sure about engine yet.

The kitchen thing--my wife loves woodworking, she has built a complete wall desk
area with cabinets, drawers, formica top; also a wall bookcase, a short room
divider/bookcase for homeschooling room with routreing and formica; she has been
changing the trim in our house from cheap trim to more custom routred baseboard
and door trim. She's not afraid to tackle large projects, it just takes
a while for her to plan and think it through. I'm glad she loves it, I had to
buy her a table saw one year, a routre, joiner, 10" mitre saw, routre table,
routre bits, gluing clamps. Nice thing is I get to use these tools for airplane
projects too. Most of our friends can't believe she likes to do this but
it is her thing so I just help her out which is ok with me. She dreams, draws
plans, it's a slow process but eventually gets completed, kind of like it will
      be building the 10.

I recall hearing the average stay in one home is about six years.
Judging from how long it seems to take building an RV10 it's no wonder
that a kitchen or other home improvement project pops up. I had a four
month delay prior to starting the 10 while completing the house and
      shop.
I recall Ben Westfall talking kitchen a couple weeks ago.
Time to get back to work drawing the floor plan for my next home
project, no, better yet I'll go back to bolting in the main gear
weldments. Almost done with Sec. 29

Is there a link between the RV10 and Kitchens? I completely
remodeled the master bath prior to starting the project. Then, right
before Osh, started on a COMPLETE remodel of the kitchen. Two walls
removed, which doubled the size, granite instead of the 70's yellow
tile, etc.... but for me too, it was the best thing for the project.

      Dave,

Welcome to the list. After finishing the empennage kit I had a 3 months
      wait
for the next kit, so I used the time to build my wife her dream kitchen.
      It
turned out to be one of the best moves I ever made. She has never
      complained
about the time and money I have put in the 10. Of course she also thinks
      the 10
costs about the same as her kitchen...not.

A happy wife is a happy life.

| Subject: | Mistake on the aft deck |

      Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be sending this to Vans too..

Tonight I was riveting the aft deck to the longerons of the tailcone.
In the process, I screwed up a rivet and tried drilling it out. At that
point, Murphy slapped me on the back for a second time and I managed to
drill adjacent to the original hole.

The good news is that I just barely touched the surface of the longeron,
so it's just fine. The damage has been limited to the aft deck only.

In the photo's below, you can see the longeron on the bottom and you can
see that I've polished out the error to try and reduce the possibility
      of cracking later.

I've got a couple of options.
          1) I can drill for a 5/32 rivet, but that won't completely remove
      the mistake.
          2) I thought about drilling and replacing with an AN3 bolt - That
      might remove it.
          3) I thought about drilling the hole to be perfectly round (in the
aft deck only) and then placing rivets on either side of the hole. In
this case, the screw up would be similar to a lightening hole.
          4) Just drop a rivet in and keep going.
          5) Start over again with an entirely new aft deck. (Obviously last
resort if I can't find a reasonable repair)

In the process of the mistake, I've been trying to figure out what the
real purpose of the aft deck is.... (???) I'm guessing it is designed
to keep the longerons from pull apart or pressing together in the aft
      end of the aircraft.

      Anyone have any thoughts?

      Thanks,
      Phil

The drill will wander in the oblong hole, making a larger oblong hole.

Gross overkill. And gross looking also!

      Far more work than necessary.
      > 4) Just drop a rivet in and keep going.
I vote for this one. Should have been choice #1. All you really need
is to attach the longeron to the aft deck. Setting the rivet will
      mostly fill the hole.
      > 5) Start over again with an entirely new aft deck. (Obviously
      > last resort if I can't find a reasonable repair)
Only if you're a real purist. I would bet money that there are quite a
few holes just like yours out there with a std rivet in it.

Yep! If that's the only boo-boo in your plane, you're way ahead of me.
I'm no expert by any means, but I think you put yourself through far
more stress and anxiety than necessary. But, just to be on the safe
side, maybe one of the experts will let us know if my reasoning is Ok or
      not!
      Best of luck.

What - you do not have a perfect plane like I have?????????

The aft deck is very important structurallyvto prevent excessive torsional stress
      on the tail feathers.

I am an absolute neophyte here but my suggestions (and I stress they are only my
      uneducated suggestions)

      1. drill it out and set a #5 rivet there. It will get a clean set, and it will
fill out most of the hole.

      2. Add a small doubler plate on top if it does not interfere with the mounting
of the tail feathers. (I do not think that it does there.)

      3. I do not like the AN3 bolt suggestion - hole too big - might compromise the
      longeron.

      4. Finally - ask an A&P or one with an I/A. they do these kind of repairs every
      day.

To err is human - but to really screw up you have to be an airplane builder
