Yet another thing to keep an eye out for at annual time... I just finished the bulkhead reinforcement SB as the first part of my first annual and found a bad bearing on one of the elevators - it almost feels like grit is in it. It wasn't noticeable through the control stick or when moving the elevators themselves but when disassembled it was very clearly an issue. Check those planes carefully! Another item to check at annual time. Backup EFIS Battery. Run the EFIS on backup and time how long it takes to go flat. Don't just assume you have what is documented on the backup battery. But that never runs the battery down. How many of us expect the battery to last the "Hour" or so that is documented by the manufacturer. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the battery didn't go the last mile when needed. I do expect to "Test" it at each annual just to verify its proper operation. Just wondering what if anything others are doing to very the backup battery is good. Replace it on "Time" or test to verify it's operation? Also not a bad thing to do at least once under day VFR in flight to get actual activity on the unit being powered by the backup battery, then to compare it to static battery life for comparison purposes. Hi I am planning to install an access plate into the fuse tunnel so I can access my fuel pumps without removing my center console. Can anyone tell me what the rules are for spacing the cover plate screws? I can't seem to find anything in the usual reference materials. Inquiring minds need to know Les Kearney #40643 - some assembly required.

Some what unnecessary in cold climates. In 22 yrs in Fairbanks never replaced a battery in less than 5 years. Cold weather may reduce the cranking ability at extreme cold temps by slowing the reaction, but has little impact on the capacity or life. Hot weather, such as Aridzona accelerates sulfation of the plates and vehicles that have batteries unprotected in the engine compartment rarely get more than 2 year life. I used a 680 for starting the Glastar. It lasted from 11/2003 until replaced 10/2008. It was still starting the aircraft but would hesitate if not used for several days. That was 500 hours and at least three starts per week. You might want to consider Odyssey batteries. On my certified C177RG which I owned from 1976- 2005, the FAA PMA Gill never lasted more than 2 years. I have Odyssey 680s in the 10. _____ From: owner-rv10-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-rv10-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of gary Sent: Sunday, April 12, 2009 4:27 PM Subject: RE: RV10-List: Re: annual inspection Since I lived up north for most of my life I have always replaced my battery at every annual. The 'rule' is ...... how many screws do you want to remove while you're standing on your head in the belly of the beast in the summer heat???? Depending on the size of the access plate, one screw in the corners and one in between the corners should do just fine.
