Tom,
I used the Safeair system also and I have the TruTrak Sorcerer auto

problems at all. I've also had my instruments IFR certified and they
found no problems.

Subject: | Need ideas to remove aft crank plug for C/S prop |
Buying a second hand engine seemed like a good idea at the time. However, the continuing
saga of owner sweat equity is starting to get old!
My O540 engine originally was configured for a fixed pitch prop. To convert over
to a C/S prop, there are two plugs that need to be removed from the crank. The
forward one was removed before the engine was mounted. However, the aft plug
is still present. It has an offset 9/32" hole pierced into the steel plug that's
about 7" behind the front of the crank. The plug is the press in type, not
threaded. The governor oil tube is about 1.5" forward of the plug (just to make
it interesting).
Several folks have pointed me to using a dent puller slide hammer to remove the
plug. No joy here so far. I can get to the hole, but the hook attachment gets
hung up on the oil tube. Trying to thread a rod into the hole didn't work as
5/16" is too large and 1/4" is too small... The cheap dent pullers use a mandrel
w/ screw, but it would seem difficult to get it into steel.
A helpful guy at the local Advanced Auto Parts store suggested using a bearing
puller. However, the issue is that the hole is quite small and there's no guarantee
that spending $150 for a puller that has a good assortment of attachments
will get me any further. The auto parts place does rent bearing pullers, but
they are too large.
Splitting the case and tapping out the plug is not an attractive option.
Have others gone through this process? If so, what worked?
Thanks in advance for replies!
Jay

I just got back last week from a vacation trip that I think
would be an awesome destination for any RV-10 owner.
My wife and I, along with Ed Hayden and Vic Syracuse and
their wives, went to the Bahamas for a few days.
It's really easy to fly over there, and it was some
fantastic scenery. Highly recommended if you ever get
the urge to go to a nice tropical destination.

Yours came with a tray??? Sheesh ..... all I got was the servo and a

May take me a few days to get those pics.

Yeah it did come with a tray, but i think it's too flimsy to use. I don't want
that think to be flexing under the servo.
It was also just a half an inch too short to install it under the 3 screws on the
side of the elevator bell crank.
Oh well... Looking forward for your pictures.

Subject: | Re: Cowl horizontal hinge pin w/ tab |
The fiberglass tabs described below were suggested by Roger
Heisdorffer (a real RV expert). I'm grateful to Frank Benedict for
advice and help.
A 1 1/2" wide by about 5" long tab was fabricated with its upper
half bonded to the inside of the top cowl at the exit hole location.
The lower half of the tab was formed to the inside of the lower cowl,
which had been sanded fairly smooth and waxed for release. A
countersunk hole was drilled through the lower cowl and the tab to a
nutplate on the inside of the lower half of the tab. This allows a #8
screw to hold the two cowl halves firmly together, mitigating (I hope)
the problem of vibration-induced hinge eye breakage. The same screw
affixes a "medallion" that covers the exit hole and prevents the pin
from moving forward into the prop. About 3/8" of the pin extends out
of the cowl when the pin is bottomed on the firewall; the medallion
pushes the pin end inward against the cowl.
With the cowl installed, the exit hole was drilled #40, then enlarged
with a Dremel and centered on the pin.
With the cowls removed, but pinned to each other, a 6" or so dummy
pin was wrapped with a couple turns of electrical tape maybe 2" from
the end to form a channel to guide pin insertion. The dummy pin was
inserted from the front of the cowl and used to push the cowl pin back
until the tape on the dummy pin contacted the hinge.
The cowls were taped and waxed where adhesion might have otherwise
been a problem; the gap between the cowls was filled with child's
modeling clay. The tab (about 20 thicknesses of 8 oz fabric) was then
laid up with West System over the dummy pin. After the tab cured, the
dummy pin was removed, re-taped and reinserted. The gaps were filled
in with West System epoxy and Hi-density filler blended "good and
thick" with roughly an equal volume of Cabosil. The cowls were again
taped and waxed to avoid accidental glassing together. With a little
sanding, the hole looked very good.
Making the "medallions" is a whole 'nother story - it was about 12
hours' work to learn to design them and fabricate them from flat 1/4"
60601 plate. They're fitted to the cowl and curved around towards the
front so that the single screw holds them firmly in place with no
rotation. Several builders locally have cut off a stainless steel
spoon (yes, table silverware!) for the same purpose. I'd be happy to
describe making the medallions if anyone's interested.

Hi All,
For those using a Slickstart with conventional mags, where did you mount it?

I just got back last week from a vacation trip that I think
would be an awesome destination for any RV-10 owner.
My wife and I, along with Ed Hayden and Vic Syracuse and
their wives, went to the Bahamas for a few days.
It's really easy to fly over there, and it was some
fantastic scenery. Highly recommended if you ever get
the urge to go to a nice tropical destination.

Have you tried contacting an engine builder like Barrett for advice?

It was absolutely MUCH easier to do than I would have imagined
even with what you read on the "how to's" for getting in and
out of the Bahamas. You literally can just have your passport
and sticker in hand, call up FSS and file a flight plan, and
once it's filed just activate it and use VFR flight following
and go. When you get there it's really no worry getting in.
And leaving isn't really a big deal either. You file the plan,
advise customs...call customs with your ETA, and then just fly.
Once you get there, it's some paperwork and a little
hassle...more than in the Bahamas....but it'll be well under
an hour and you'll be on your way somewhere else.
The only thing that everyone will have to do that we didn't,
is that within a month you'll have to log on electronically
to EAPIS and file your stuff in advance.
Probably the worst paper/electronic mess there is, is navigating
the DTOPS and EAPIS websites....getting registered and set up
with a customs sticker is a real pain in the butt, as their
site and process isn't intuitive at all. I was going to
do the voluntary EAPIS filing but I just gave up because it
wasn't something I could accomplish on the spur of the moment.
For the U.S. Fed paperwork and items, plan ahead. For the
rest there isn't much worry.

now you've done it...
I don't have the cabin top attached yet, but I think I'll just skip
that part, hang the engine and prop, put some gas in this thing and
start flying.

Where are you guys finding these fan motors? I've looked in Aircraft
Spruce and another spot and can't find them. Thanks, Dan
