Congratulations Deems!
You've set such a high standard for build documentation on your web site, I
can't wait to see your trip reports.
I'm looking forward to seeing you and N519PJ at OSH.

Subject: | Re: Sam James Cowl |
We have just started flying with our Sam James cowl and plenum. We have
not flown yet with wheel pants on, and experience is limited, so take this
for what it is worth.
I think the cowl installation was fairly simple, it really didn't go that
bad. The plenum we received was essentially a good template to use to get
started. Like Deems we used Vans baffling, which meant we had to modify
the aft end of the plenum significantly. It is important to note that the
aft mounting flange of the 'stock' plenum points downward, we flipped this
flange over so it points upward. Doesn't sound like a big deal but it
allowed us to move the intake for the oil cooler up an extra inch, which
meant less of the intake is blocked by the cylinder. Also had to modify
for our purge valve. Bottom line, between the plenum, and the ram air
installation I learned way more about fiberglass than I ever though I
would. Makes the cabin top and doors seem like a walk in the park.
Our temps have been what I perceive to be normal for the stage we are in,
cruise oil temps around 185, and CHTs 370 - 390, climb oil temps at 200
and CHTs from 400 - 420 (67 OAT at altitude). We do NOT have ANY louvers
cut in the bottom of the cowl yet. Our engine is a Lycoming Thunderbolt @
260HP, nothing special done to it other than flowed and 'extra' balanced,
no cold air induction, no bumps on compression, stock oil cooler, and
stock location.
Would I do it again??? Well now that I know how much fun it is to fly,
was worth the extra time? I like building and I like a challenge, I
probably would do it again, but I am a sucker. Can't speak to the speed
difference, but I will continue to tell myself that this speed mod is
responsible for 10 MPH, and the ram air is responsible for anther 5 MPH.
Making cruise at 200 MPH on 7 GPH a reality, oh wait reality, I forgot...
We all know the only thing that makes an airplane fly is cash, and the
only thing that makes it faster is more cash, these mods all seem to
satisfy the equation.
Just the story of one airplane, good luck reasoning yourself to a
decision.
Thanks, Jason Kreidler

Subject: | Phase 1 'Things' |
Deems, you have been an incredible inspiration for a lot of the current
crop of RV-10 builders and flyers. I am hopeful that you will
transition gracefully into the flying field just like Tim and continue
web based support of your trips, mods, fixes and recommendations. I
have already felt the dearth of your postings for the last two months as
you left the nest to accomplish Phase One "without incident".
Enjoy the unencumbered flight in that beautiful
James/Barrett/Forsling/Davis creation - N519PJ. You and the Airbus 380
should make for quite an OSH '09.

'Things' during Phase 1
Initial problem with the wrong oil temp sender, oil temp read WAY too
low, replaced on 2nd flight.
Sticky/'chirpy' right brake flts 1-3
Heavy right wing, Left flap not set correctly.
Roll trim reversed (embarassed).
Confirmed need for speed controller on elevator trim.
Worries about high temps. As stated before probably over thought this
one.
Problem with poor crimps on coax for transponder antenna.
Difficulty calibrating fuel tanks w/ Op Tech/JPI
Volume too low on Com2.
Dynon D10A b/u efis configed as kilometers per hour - kph vs knots per
hour-kts (I thought I had a world record RV10 for a moment).

Did get the pilot license just before heading to the east coast to clean up
our catamaran and sail for a bit.- Would have already done the first fli

Congrats again, and now the fun starts.

Subject: | Heads Up On Wheel Pant Fiberglass Quality... |
Dear Listers,
I took delivery of an RV-8 QB finish kit around September 2008. Last weekend I
started tackling the installation of the wheel pants. The first thing I noticed
on inspection of the wheel pants was how horrible the quality was. The front
piece didn't fit the back piece and the flange shoulder on the back pieces
were not straight. Getting a even an "okay" fit was nearly impossible. The
other issue was the quality of the fiberglass itself. On the rear part of the
back piece, the epoxy resin was completely spider-cracked on both sides and
on both pants. It was nothing a few more coats of resin and a bunch of sanding
couldn't fix, but who wants to do that? Needless to say, I was fairly demoralized
by the fact that there was really no way I was going to be able to make
them really fit together "perfect".
But, I plowed ahead anyway and started trying to mount them to the Grove Airfoiled
gear. I had a lot of trouble getting them to fit correctly onto the landing
gear. The main issue seemed to be that they are too small at the bottom and
don't fit over the brake caliper without touching. I kept thinking that I must
just not have them in the correct position, so I kept hogging out a little
more glass here and there with the Dremel tool until basically the holes were
all too big (for the gear leg and for the wheel). I finally found a couple of
builder web sites where others have had the same issue with the brake caliper
interference and they added a 2.5" "blister" to pooch out over the area that
rubs. But by this time it was too late for that first set of pants.
But here's the interesting part. Since I had basically destroyed both of the original
pants trying to get them to fit, I decided to just order up a replacement
set, take a sedative, and start over again on the whole thing. The new wheel
pants arrived from Van's yesterday. The difference in quality between these
replacement units and the ones from last year is incredible! The seams are
nearly perfect on the replacements and only required a bit of sanding on the
front part to get a *perfect*, and I mean *perfect* fit between the front and
back halves. The consistency of the fiberglass layups is 100% better on the new
units, and that seam at the top was already so flat, I didn't even have to
sand it down. There are no spider cracks in the glass anywhere. I haven't actually
weighed them, but replacements feel like they might be somewhat lighter
as well.
Obviously Van's switched fiberglass vendors at some point in the last 10 months
and the switch was well worth it. I've attached a couple of photos of the Circa
September 2008 and Circa June 2009 sets I received. The only similarity is
in the overall shape.
FYI

Has anyone filled a completely empty tank to determine volume. After
calibrating the fuel totalizer in phase I. I find that several fill ups
indicate that the actual volume of the standard tanks is about 31 gal per
side. Any confirmation? I am sure the calculus wizards at Vans have the
answer but they have not answered my inquiry yet? It would be extremely
unlikely that the computed volume (at standard temps) would be exactly 30
gals

Subject: | Aluminum door pin blocks |
Listers,
We made a small run of aluminum door pin guide blocks. These are
essentially the stock teflon part, but made from aluminum. The print for
the blocks is on page 45-15.
We just installed a set on a customer's plane, and I have a set like this on
my plane. They work very well. I think most would agree that this is one
of the few weak spots on a -10, and an upgrade is pretty important.
These are $65 per set of four, drilled with the 3.4 degree angle and
countersunk for #10 screws, USPS priority mail shipping included. Please
give me a call if you would like a set.

Great stuff!
The audio set off my airsickness button though. I used to airsick so
often when competing that the mere sound of the audio turns my stomach.
Having said that, what was the other klaxon that went off when the dive
down the valley started? Just not familiar with that sound.
Thanks.

Another observation.fuel just covering the floor of the tank at the filler
opening is about 6-8 gallons. a straw type stick can measure anything at 8+
gallons at the tank filler. Mine is graduated at 10,15,20,25,30. Just to
confirm the cruising capabilities of the 10. My return from CNW to FFZ was
about 800NM in 5:05 and a total burn of 45 gallons. There was a miniscule
tailwind westbound. TAS ranged from 148 to 157 KTAS faster as I got lighter.
Flight was at 12000 and 55%. 20"" and 2250 RPM and -10 to -25 F LOP; the
burn was about 8.8 gph. CHTs high 20s to low 300s. EGTs high 1300s.

I did a "calibrated? paint stick and filled from empty to 30 gal in 10

bit (reads slightly higher than actual - on the safe side).

Subject: | Glider flying, HuH!! |
That was the alarm for the spoiler deployment with having the landing gear
down. What I find interesting is that they were flying at 120+ knots with t
he spoilers open so that they could better follow the terrain without build
ing even more airspeed...but in my glider=2C I believe it is prohibited to
open or have open spoilers at that speed.

Subject: | Rudder/aileron Gust Lock |
This is roughly the final product.... only difference will be totally radius-ed
feet to fit around the pedals. It weighs a whopping 5 oz. I believe it should
be adjustable enough to work on any of the RV's. I will try a few in the next
few days. This can be accomplished by shortening the long rod and using a
shorter spring. The spring is included. With the spring under some compression
the length is 24". Seems to work perfect on my 10. Not sure of cost, but
less than $50.

Looks interesting. I made a version of this but wasn't happy that it would push
firmly enough on the rudder pedals to keep the rudder from moving. Using my
tow bar pushing against the rudder pedals and the seat back seemed to pin the
rudder much better. How firmly is your rudder held with your lock?? Sure looks
nicer than the one I made!!!! larry

I've got em too, and they work great. I do wonder if they aren't a bit
of overkill for the -10. I haven't found a need for the full extent of
the range of motion.

I have the Rosens and they are nice.......but not sure if I need them. Used them
very little.....hit my head on them all the time. I took them out as part
of my annual (doing more upholstery), and just put them back in before a trip
to Vegas in May. My wife used hers for a little while during the Vegas trip....on
the side window. Flew to Reno today, but it was overcast and did not have
a need for anything like that........

The "Blue Sky" ones from Alex are a little smaller, much lighter, and
easier to move out of the way....and are about 1/2 the price. But the
Rosens are very nicely made.

It's made of aluminum tubing.... the feet are dipped in a plastic bath....
and to use it as an aileron lock all you need is a short piece (6") of velc
ro.... wrap it around the gust lock and the stick.- The spring loaded pin
is there just so it can be stored as a shorter unit.- You can put as man
y holes as you'd like, or just one that compresses the spring all the way.
-
Because I needed one quickly, I also made a pvc unit.- It worked well, bu
t was heavy, bulky, and uglier than sh%&.
I installed it today and then went to the back of the plane and shook the h
eck out of the rudder just to see if I could shake it loose.... no problem,
it hung right in there.
The other advantage is that you will NEVER be able to take off and forget t
o remove it..... no matter how oblivious you may be.
