Thanks for all the Congrats,
I wasn't in a hurry but when you consider I'll be 48 in September, the real
ity of spending more than 10 percent of your life working on this project s
tarts to sink in. And Wayne...the reason it took so long was I had to wait
for you to finish the O2 system so I could see how to do it without reinven
ting the wheel. My glass parts are still in primer, I'm going to spray them
this week prior to the first flight. At that time I will post some picture
s of the finished aircraft. I can say that anyone planning on painting is i
n for WAY more than you expect in the form of work. It was 10 times more ti
me consuming than any other project I've ever done. My first time using HVL
P and urethane paint. That combination is very susceptible to orange peel.
I have a little but the Loehle system is great and imperfections color sand
and buff right out. Wonderfil is FANTASTIC...it's hard to rub it on only b
ecause it looks smells and acts like car wax...once you shoot the primer ov
er it it's weave and pinhole city but as soon as you sand it they disappear
. One more final coat of primer, light sand and it's ready for paint...I hi
ghly recommend it. I did have help from a friend in the paint process....he
was more agile than I and climbed in and around all the tough spots...like
the bottom..I had to move everything to Boulder City airport for the inspe
ction and fly off. That sucked because we have a nice facility at North Las
Vegas and had to go from 3500 sf to a small T hangar, tools and all. Mel A
sberry did the inspection and was a great guy to deal with. He climbed over
the whole project for 4 hours. He found 2 loose jamb nuts and my four pull
controls for heat, aux intake air and purge valve were not labeled...I can
live with that. I'm not an excitable or emotional person but when he hande
d me the temp cert I admit there was a rush of emotion that ran through me.
It can only be explained by those who have been through it I guess. If the
first flight is more so then I can't wait. FWIW I know my limitations and
have given the first flight to my friend and hangar co owner Bob Kaufmann..
..He has about 1800 hours TT and 20 in the RV-10..I deal with risk manageme
nt everyday and can find no other reason for me to do the flight other than
to say I did. To each his own, I have no issues with it or any ego that ne
eds to be stroked. Look for the pictures and first flight post sometime nex

I saw a post at one time where one of you made an access panel in the
back baggage wall and am trying to locate the person that did that and
see his pictures of the panel. I just finished my second conditional and
made up my mind I've got to do something that make it easier for that
back area access. Tons of screws to remove and undoing the seat belts
etc. I also have my oxygen tank attached to the back baggage wall area,
which I took the idea from Randy's web site.
So whoever that was I hope you can post your idea so I can copy you.

I'd be a little cautious about cutting the panel as it may affect
strength of the bulkhead as designed by Van's.
Might check with them before shortcutting potential strength design.

Wayne, I think that is my build. My only regret is that's it's not even
larger or add a second one. Tremendous for Battery access etc.. My O2
filler connect is also located there.
On important component. Use a split hinge pin to allow for easy removal.
A slightly different design is to have the door hinge at the top and
hold it up by a simple Velcro strap or the like.

Just a quick PIREP on my Duckworks Dual HID light system.
We installed two Duckworth 35 Watt HID lights and a Wig/Wag controller
to the leading edges of our -10. In the short time we have been flying I
have had A LOT of people (strangers) come up to me and tell me how
bright & noticeable they in full daylight. I remember seeing my
neighbor's Pilatus swoop in to our filed with his HID's a blazing and I
had to have them. Also of note several people thought my plane was much
larger because of the spread of the lights (?). For the record no wing
extension mods!.
Since their introduction I believe there are less expensive choices
available but regardless I am extremely happy with the firepower of the
dual HID's and think it's one of the least expensive safety options you
can add to their build. Seeing is the key to avoiding.

Note: Lights are not on, that is just the suns reflection.

Actually, I've heard many times that it is a structural wall,
and that you can't fly without it, and if you alter the back
wall you want to make sure it's sufficiently beefed up to
give it back it's structural-ness. So, if you cut into it,
just plan ahead to make sure you do all you need to make it
just as strong again. Contacting Vans on that one wouldn't
be a bad idea.

Subject: | Re: Rear baggage wall access panel |
In a past life, I used to have to pull off this one little 6" x 6" plate
that had a screw about every inch around the perimeter--it was a structural
panel. Unfortunately, that's usually true of anything with a lot of
screws/bolts/rivets/welds..."lots of screws" should be the first sign that
maybe it needs more than casual treatment! Not that it can't be doubled up
or reinforced, but it's worth checking.
