      Dear Listers,

There are just a few more days left of this year's List Fund Raiser! Response
has been very good, but still well behind last year. If you've been waiting until
the last minute to make your contribution and maybe even pick up a great
gift, now might be good time to show your support!

Please remember that there isn't any sort of commercial advertising on the Lists
and the *only* means of keeping these Lists running is through your Contributions
      during this Fund Raiser.

I have one, it's mounted on two 3/4 by .125 angle with a aluminum plate. Th
is assembly is attached to the longerons behind the baggage bulkhead. Works
fine. The magnometer only has four #20 IIRC wires so the cable is small an
d easy to route. Make sure you mount the units with brass screws. I used fo
ur nylon posts that I could adjust to allow the unit to be level on all axi
      s.

I am working on the wings of my -10 now and ordered the SafeAir AOA/Pitot,
along with the pitot/static line kit. I also ordered two of the SafeAir Dyn
on compass mounting kits for dual EFIS units. I figured I would get all the
wiring and plumbing lines run through the wings before I button them up. W
ith the wiring and plumbing done in the left wing, I got to thinking about
the wingtip magnometer mounts and the location, and am now worried that the
magnometers will be close to the wingtip nutplates, my Whelen A600's and w
iring, and my HID wingtip ballasts and landing/taxi lights. I am now thinki
ng that an alternate location would be better and after searching the forum
, found that a lot of folks building models other than the -10 are putting
the magnometers in the empennage, either on the V/S deck or aft of the bagg
age bulkhead. I am inclined to do one of these locations instead of the win
gtip. Any comments, suggestions, or info from other -10 builders would be a

I built small shelves either side of the vertical stringer behind the
center of the baggage compartment to hold my compass and AHRS. I'll
have redundant units, so there is a pair mounted to either side. I have
no experience with that location, and someone mentioned that the
changing stuff in the baggage compartment could change things for the
compass etc. I was worried about access in case of repairs. It's hard
to find anyplace devoid of things that can adversely effect these units,
so I set my stuff up on the bench and held large nuts, bolts and other
'stuff' around the mounted units (on the bench, not in the airplane) to
see how sensitive they were. My MGL units aren't that sensitive to the
hardware that I was using for the test, so I'm fairly sure that the spot
I selected is going to be OK.

      Hi Jay-
You have not said much about your tubing - rigid or hose. However, I also m
ade an EZ home setup that works great. Some of my findings:
      -
If you have a Tygon hose setup check your supply of plastic fittings. Cheap
ones have flashing on the barbs that create leaks. Best source for "fresh
or soft" Tygon and fittings is www.usplastics.com. This is the approach I t
ook and passed two official pitot/static tests with "zero leakage".
      -
Also, if you have vinyl hose on your test setup it is guaranteed to-leak
and the leak will change with temperature.
      -
      Looks like your getting close.

You may want to check the tray if you have a TruTrak AP installed, I had an
issue with the tray when testing the panel alone. I have a similar drop in
pressure right now but the system matches right up with the GPS speed & al
titude so It doesn't appear to be an issue. I plan on having the pitot/stat
ic check completed soon which may or may not tell me I have a problem. The
ballon test works pretty well for now. Maybe an instrument guru can tell us
if there is some allowed blowby in the instruments themselves. All of my c
onnections are confirmed not to leak so it's going somewhere. The only plac
e I can think is internally on the instrument itself.

I have tested my pitot system using the EZ homemade system.- Works well w
ith my indicated AS right on the mark.- But I have a slow leak that I can
not find.- Loses about 1 knot every 3 to 4 minutes. A little faster loss
at higher manometer pressures.- The leaks seems to stop when the manomet
er pressure gets to about 7.5 inches (105 Knots).- Is this acceptable?-
Any advice on how to find leak--I have "soapy bubble tested" all connectio
      ns.- Thanks.- Jay rowe

FYI. There is no regulatory pitot check and so no such thing as a
pitot/static check. Only the static system and your transponder reporting
system is checked. Don't assume that your pitot system is checked as part
      of a standard 91.411 or 91.413 certification.

The critical test is static. Cannot lose more than 100' in one min.
Assuming 1000 ft on altimeter.I had a leak on TT ap 10 tray. Called and
they sent new block that is on back of tray. Some have been a problem.
Retrofitted all lines to the safe air system. Works beautifully and all
quick disconnect. can also use fittings from truck air system.

If you are going to fly where a transponder and encoder are required, a
static system check is required. If you care about protecting your
airspeed instrumentation, the pitot system must be connected and
maintained at the same pressure as the static system, otherwise you will
overspeed the airspeed indicator once the static system is raised to
altitude. As you say, it isn't regulatory, it is good safe practice for
the instruments. A side benefit is that the airspeed can be verified at
      the same time.
Some of us have the joy of operating under a mode C veil for our home
base, making encoder and certification mandatory before first flight.

For those of you not to this point yet.... do yourselves a favor and drill
a 2nd hole through the front axle.... if you don't you will almost always e
nd up with too little torque or too much.- Because of the nut and use of
cotter pin, we are limited to 60 degrees, 1/6th turn to get it right.- Dr
illing a 2nd hole, you can at least get closer to optimum (30 degrees, 1/12
      th of a turn.

;) yeah and for the wheel axles with extensions I went to the farm
store and bought a "bigass" combination wrench and cut it in half for
easier maneuvering. Gotta love them tools.

BTW: harbor freight has a flyer out with the infared laser thermometer
on sale for under $30. When you need one they're awesome.

Does the duct tape go on your teeth because you're tightening so much?

For those of you not to this point yet.... do yourselves a favor
and drill a 2nd hole through the front axle.... if you don't you will
almost always end up with too little torque or too much. Because of the
nut and use of cotter pin, we are limited to 60 degrees, 1/6th turn to
get it right. Drilling a 2nd hole, you can at least get closer to
      optimum (30 degrees, 1/12th of a turn.

| Subject: | Nose wheel nut wrench |

      It's easy to remember:

Don McDonald had a wrench, E-I-E-I-O

I agree completely with drilling the nut or extra hole concept. We
drilled the nut after finding one was too tight and one was too loose.

The other day I was heading out for my regular commute when I saw a
friend in his sweet F33 Bonanza in the run up area. We waved and he was
off for his left downwind. I completed my run-up as another two
departures and an arrival proceeded my left downwind. I ended up passing
the F33 at on my way through 8,000' to 9,500'. I was climbing faster and
at a greater rate of climb. While we were not that close to each other
he did comment that he could see my "shit eating grin." All I could say
is that its an "official RV Shit eating grin" thank you very much and
      shit never tasted so good!

The more I fly the -10 the more I like it. I am not sure if it's the
avionics suite, the comfort or it's utilitarian nature but it is one
      terrific airplane.

      Keep building and fly safe,
