Subject: | Re: RV-10 QB Fuse & Wings For Sale - Ohio |
Hey Ed,
Lew Gallagher here.
First, I'm sorry to see so many RV-10 projects going on the block lately.
For three years now, I've been helping my friend build his RV-10 and we're
almost at engine start and inspection stage. I've enjoyed this project so
much that I've been collecting parts for a future build of my own. I now
have the tail/empenage kit, cowling/spinner, rudder pedals, Whelan lights,
etc. So I'm always looking for additional parts at bargain prices. Am I
correct in assuming when you say you have the wings and fuselage, that the
tail/empenage is not included?
I just missed a quick build wing kit here in SC for around $10K a while
back. I doubt if you would sell your kits for what I could pay -- and you
are 600 miles away. However, I would like you to keep me in mind if you
don't get serious offers. Have truck and cash ... will travel! Also, if
you get any inquiries from someone who has already purchased the slow build
kits, but wanted yours instead -- then I would be interested in picking up
their slow build wing and fuse kits.
Later, - Lew

What problems have been notice with the new factory and the Rv 10 quick build I
got one of the first ones from the new factory but do not know what to look for
it has alot of scratches on the wings but I hoped that paint would hide them.
Have not started working on the fuse yet what should I look for.

Defects from new QBs....Ailerons and flaps trailing edge not double
flush riveted with a flush rivet set, rather driven all the way with
back rivet set, so rivets are over driven leaving a dimpled
appearance. Just exchanged for new set which are better, but still
done wrong.
Fuselage...mid fuse longerons F1046L&R only skins were dimpled,
longerons were not countersunk, so attachment was by rivet shank only.
Longerons not cut to length, both top and mid-section. Much tougher to
make clean cuts with die grinder or Dremel than it would have been on
band saw. Baggage floor support rails and side skines not dimpled, nor
installed with more than a couple throwaway pop rivets. So spent today
dimpling skins with pop rivet dimple dies because once skins were
riveted on, nothing else would reach. A real PITA. Upper longerons not
drilled for tail cone, nor the template for them supplied. All snap
bushings for wire runs missing, as well as some other hardware. The
control column mounts were not trimmed per plans, so have to remove
them and cut out per plans.
My fuel vent line in one tank was bent wrong, leaving no room for
sending unit float. Took some creative effort to figure how to move it
without kinking the soft aluminum, given the only access is through
the sending unit hole.
I guess that hits the highlights. I'm probably forgetting other stuff.
Phil Perry had a pretty good list on his.

Subject: | Air Access on Wheel Farings |
Hi
After reading all the advice about doing the farings etc before wings go on,
I thought I would take a crack at my wheel farings. Seeing how inaccessible
the inner tube valve stems are, I was wondering what the "best practise" is
to deal with this issue.
Pix would be a bonus!

Les,
First, get some new tubes from Desser that have the 90 degree bend on
them (they do not make leak guard tubes with 90 degree bend). The
straight stems end is too close to the axle nut, making getting a
chuck on them a royal pain. Plus side is these tubes are about $13
each vice the $50 for leak guard.
Next, cut yourself a small access door that is hinged at the front.
Put the door at the 9 o'clock position on the wheel looking at it from
the side. Then use some tire chalk marker to mark the wheel at the 6
o'clock position when the stem is at the 9 o'clock.
That way, you can move the bird till you see the mark showing out the
bottom of the wheel pant, then open the door and the stem is facing
you ready for air up!
I fill my tubes with nitrogen to slow the inevitable slow leaks.
I just installed the remote pressure sensors (available thru Spruce)
so I can monitor pressure without having to put a gauge on it. Takes
a bit more lead weight to balance them, but it's worth it.
