Jim, just wanted to say Thanks for the detail on the jacking. I never
would have tried the C-clamp thing on my own but it works great. Engine
hoist on the engine mount (engine on), an oak 1.5x1.5 c-clamped to each
spar, a camera tripod doing nothing back at the tail.
The first pant is going on fine - might try the 2 ply supports but not
having any problems there yet. I just got a laser line thingy - very
cool. $30 at Sears for a 1 line device with detachable magnetic mount.
Couldn't imagine exactly how to use it despite all the mentions of it's
use on this list. Fool around with it for 10 minutes and it starts to
seem indispensible. The centerline of the aircraft thing is a piece of
cake.

the fuselage level side-to-side. The longer 2x4s are clamped to the aft sides
of the spar stubs to help maintain the level position. It needs to be long enough
to reach from the top of the spar to the floor. I used 2 C clamps per side.
I jacked the spars just enough to get the main tires about 1/4" off the ground,
then raised the low side a little more to bring the fuselage level. The C
clamped 2x4s did a good job of maintaining that position, and showed no tendency
to walk. Once you have it leveled side-to-side it is easy to tweak the engine
hoist and/or tail support to get level fore and aft.

> The other thing that really helped in getting the wheel pants in position was
to make 2 L-shaped jigs to hold the wheel pant level fore and aft. Basically
just 2 plywood supports with one leg on the floor and the other leg perpendicular
to the floor. After you establish the fore and aft level line on each wheel
pant(use a laser level) you can measure the height from that line to the ground.
Drill a #40 hole in the nose and tail of each pant on the level line. Drill
a hole in each jig the same distance from the floor, and pin each jig to the
pant with a finishing nail. You now have a way to hold the pant level and at
the correct height. By moving the jigs around you have a stable way to position
the pant relative to the tire and mounting bracket. Have fun.

Bill,
I am glad to hear it is working for you. Your first laser level is just the foot
in the door. I started with a single line level, then a dual line, and now a
5 line level. They are kind of like hammers; more is better.

I've been underimpressed with EAA's mags and Web site. Well, the new
format and direction of their Sport Aviation mag has changed my opinion
on the magazine.
Even though magazines seem to be on their way out along with some other
print media, EAA made some substantial changes and I'm actually looking
forward to getting it each month. Great how-to articles - many basic,
some less so, but all welcome. Nice Job!
So now its Kitplanes because I'm building, Flying because of the
writers, Sport Aviation because it's much better now.
Now I'm going back to the EAA website and re-check it out. I've liked
the how-to videos I've seen so far - maybe more improvements await.

And are all IO-360 engines at 2 ppm?

We're on the same page. I really like the new magazine and the video
tips on the website. Great stuff.
I still like Kitplanes, but I'm not looking forward to it as much
anymore. The latest Sport Aviations have me more excited about them.
I'm just wondering how long they can keep up the content before running
out. Right now, the content is pretty dense and I love it.
It'll be interesting to see how KP responds... Especially after their
negative "I told you so" editorial that was directed at the EAA a few
months back.

Yeah, Sport Aviation has gotten back to just about as good as it was when
Jack Cox was the editor. He retired some years ago and moved to Asheboro NC
where he now publishes an excellent mag called "Sportsman Pilot" A very
nice magazine, for only $12 a year (4 quarterly issues).

The latest issue has a nice article about my Pietenpol in it.

I am going to guess that it is longer. As I recall that back seam has an aluminum
fillet that is pro-sealed in between the skins. The lower frame accepts the
fiberglass lower tail piece. I would suggest at this point that you place #6
nutplates on the tailpiece attach holes. You WILL have to remove this piece for
maintainence - the screws are much easier to remove than a spinning pop rivet.

My unpainted control surfaces seem quite well balanced, but as I look at the paint
thing, I would appreciate any comments about what needed to be done after
painting to re balance. I know if the controls are not balanced after painting
that it can change the Vne dramatically and can put you at risk for flutter.

IIRC, it is..... If you look at the skin, you'll see how the rivet
lines merge toward the aft-edge.
The second rib from the bottom is angled down so they meet at the
lower-aft edge of the rudder.

Jake;
That looks right from the picture. I don't remember specifically, but I
think some of the fiberglass may fill in that little space. compare it
to the plan pics again.

Density is good. I still look forward to Kitplanes with one big
reservation - the 'survey' issues where they do the lists - lists of
plans built aircraft, lists of kits, lists of engines. A waste of
paper... just filler.
Maintaining those kinds of lists is a service to the community I guess
but just put it on a web page. I want to see Stein's series or the
machine shop stuff. How-to stuff is the draw for me even if it's stuff
I don't plan to ever do.

On the other side of that coin, those are some of my favorite issues.
I like to go through and look at all the various designs, specs, etc,
and drool a bit... :-)
