Just out of curiosity, how accurate and how effective are the dipsticks
that
folks are using? Seems like the tank is still about half full when the
fuel
is skimming the bottom at the fuel neck. With even an imperceptible
slope
it seems like the reading could be off by quite a bit. I like the idea
of a
dipstick, just wondering what results folks are getting with the RV-10.
Anxiously awaiting warmer and calmer weather so I can cross the 450 hour
mark!
Thanks,
Marcus

great reference!
question I have is how did those who calibrated the fuel do it one
gallon at a time? 60x 1 gallon jugs, every 5 gallons would probably be
fine upto 25 gallons per side..
thanks!

I can't see how a dip stick is beneficial. I've tried it won't measure
any fuel less than 15 gallons per side. The AFS 3500 fuel totalizer is
accurate to .5 gallon. During flight test bothe tanks showed fuel
burned at 29.5 as the engine sputtered. You can't ask for much better
than that. FWIW though I Still flight plan at 15 gph fuel burn and
pick a must land point if the EFIS craps out. Can't totally give up on
the basics

There's a pretty simple one to make.
Get 2 wooden paint stirrers.
As you calibrate your tank by addint fuel, put a pen and ink mark at
each 5 gallons put into the tank.
This gives you a guaranteed measure of how much fuel you have in each
tank.....

Subject: | Re: fuel dipstick |
what i did was pour 5 gallons in and mark . when i got to 25 gallons
i poured 1 gallon at a time and marked the full mark at full tanks top
of filler and the measured number of gallons total. my measurement of
the last 10 gallons before empty is done by sliding the dip stick
straight down to the bottom until it touches always holding the stick
against the back side of the filler hole. . i get consistent and
accurate measurements that way. between marks i estimate the gallons
and check it against the fuel monitor and the float gauge i have
installed which gauges each tank separately. it is a 2 tank EI
instrument.. i am confident in this system. the float gauge only 30
gallons until at/or below 15 gallons or so. but at these levels to
empty i found it to be right on. i tested it by draining the tanks 5
gallons at a time then 1 gallon for the last 5 gallons for each tank.

at each fill up i need to reset the fuel total. if i want to add fuel
i want to know what each tank has before adding. i fly by switching
tanks every 30 minutes, but often i land with uneven loads. also i may
only want to take enough fuel to complete a flight. i like the
confidence of looking in the tank visually with the stick in case i
forget or reset the totalizer incorrectly. of course you guys not
