From: "Perry, Phil" My suggestion would be to install the static ports and the static system (at least to the T-connector). I'd also run conduit down the left side of the tailcone from the F-1007, through the F-1008, and ending at the F-1009 bulkheads. This way you can pull wires and coax through the tailcone without crawling back in there again later. After you get them joined it becomes a real PITA to crawl through the baggage door and down the tail cone. It gets even worse when you rivet the F-1028 Baggage Bulkhead Channel down the middle of the tailcone opening. The rear seatback brace couldn't be in a worse spot for making the turn between the baggage door and tailcone. If you're a smaller framed guy, it might not be that bad. I am 6' 3", weigh 230lbs, and bend just about as well as a popsicle stick. I'm hoping I only have to crawl back there another 5-10 times before the project is done. Be certain you have done all the work you want in the tailcone, like install and hookup of static ports, something to pull the tail light/strobe wiring through later, like string trimmer line. You will have a fair amount of match drilling, followed by separating the two pieces, deburring and dimpling before you start the riveting process. Much of the riveting of the bottom sections is easier with a second person to do the bucking. I only wish I could control a full Garmin stack with the G3X push buttons now. As it currently stands, I believe you have to load an approach in your 430 and then do it again on your G3X. Kind of a pain, but it would be nice if they linked up so you only have to load the approach once. But I really like the direction the product is going! My Long-EZ has been sitting for 3 years and we are in the process of reviving it. We are thinking about getting rid of the gyros and vacuum system and replacing it with an EFIS, engine monitor and new electrical system for a total cost of $5-7000. Would this expenditure be recouped when the plane is finally sold? Anyone with any experience with this situation? Any thoughts on what needs to be done to the engine? It wasn't pickled before storage. We have looked at the cylinders with a camera and they appear to be rust free. It appears your son is not instrument rated so you really don't need too much in that regard. You probably will not recoup this investment, as avionics technology is changing so fast that whatever you put in will be "last year's device" when you sell it. I'm always in favor of engine monitors. If it were my engine I'd try to get a look at the cam and the followers, for signs of rust/corrosion. If the engine is a TCM you can pull the push rods and lifters without pulling the cylinders, to get a look. Not sure how you can inspect a Lycoming's cam without pulling a cylinder. -------- Bob Turner RV-10 QB Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=293977#293977 ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 10:56:00 AM PST US Subject: RV10-List: Re: Before I Joint The Tailcone! From: "Jim Berry" If you are going to use Van's strobe/elt mount, put it in before you join the tail cone. Also if you are going to have a tray or shelf behind the baggage bulkhead for GADAHRS or magnetometers do it now. If you are going to have belly mount antennas put the doublers in now. Same with autopilot servos. I expected SVT on the G3X even when they were saying they were not promising any additional features. I expect Pathways (HITS) to follow at some point. What I don=92t expect (unfortunately ) is for Garmin to offer a n alternative to their Traffic ($8,800) & WX. If one wants to buy Navworx active ADS-b it will display a limited number of targets on the G3X but not the full complement of what the Navworx system will output and it will not display any of the free WX available through the Navworx system. RATS! Because of that Garmin owners are stuck with a $55.00/month charge for the full XM / WX data feed. Note from Garmin: We will soon be adding software support for the GTS 8XX traffic system that does support ADS-B through the 1090MHz transponder frequency along with being an active traffic TAS system. The GTS 8XX does not support the UAT connection to the ADS-B traffic. As for the FIS weather that the FAA provides, the only unit that we have to receive this is the GDL 90. The GDL 90 does not interface to either the G900X or the G3X. I am not sure what th e alternatives at this point are besides XM. I'm waiting to get SV and I have the 330 transponder.A couple of weeks ago I flew from Houston to Tampa and Had traffic all but a few places. =C2-I do wish we could get the weather from a navworx but I don't see tha t in the cards with Garmin.
