Hey all.
This sounds like a stupid question, but I'm about to start work on my
empennage in a few weeks and am getting my workshop sorted out.
I've got a good set of tools coming from PlaneTools, but am wondering about
setting up a work bench. How big? I'm going to build the bench from
scratch, so wondering how wide and long would be good, since I can make it
any dimension then I might as well make it right...

I went with two of the standard EAA benches. Small enough they don't get in
the way in a two car garage, but when you put them end to end, just right
for working on the wings.

Hey Myron,
That not only looks slick and professional, I can't believe you did that in two
days! My owner/pilot has been talking a/c after he came back from his cross
training in TX -- can you imagine doing all this after the fact? Sheesh!
Hey Tony,
We actually used the crates that parts came in. One is 4X8, the other 4X9.5 --
just turned them upside down, stuck some legs on them and covered the top with
carpet.
Oh yeah, it would be a good idea to start a new thread next time when you change
the subject.

I already had a sturdy 4 X 8 workbench with a vise mounted on it. I added
two fold up tables from Costco. They are easy to use, move and put out of
the way when needed. Once i was working on the fuselage, I made a 4 X 6
platform ....about a foot high with carpet on the top.....to work on the
fuselage and cabin top. Once I was ready to put the gear on, I put the
fuselage up on the Costco table.
Things to consider....
Dimbling table....where to build it and/or put it.
You will need an 8 foot flat surface for the trailing edge of the flaps
The wings are 12 feet long, I used the two fold up tables
I had plenty of room in my garage during the summer because I could move my
wife's car outside, but in the winter I could not use her side. So I had to
shuffle stuff around to work. Unless you have plenty of room, I would not
get to carried away building stuff until you need it. Items you may or may
not need...
Wing stands
Fixture for wing leading edge and fuel tanks
Fixture for flaps

One more thing. When you are building your table(s) you need to make sure
at least one edge of the table deck extends beyond the table frame. For
example while I was working on the wing, I clamped the spar to the table.

A Garmin GNS-430/W will flow a flight plan to any device that understand
Aviation data on the RS-232 or FLT PLN data on the ARINC interface. This
includes any device from a portable up to an advanced EFIS. I have a backu

Subject: | Re: Finishing up and Painting |
It's starting to become clear that my next major step is composite
finishing. I've just 'finished' basic fabrication of the pants, canpopy
top, doors and cowling but the next step will be going back and getting
these parts to some sort of a final finish status. I guess I need to
pick a path through this including a paint system but then just focus on
composite finishing until I get it to the point where the aluminum is.
Glad I'm building an all metal airplane.
Let the mess begin!

That's all you get. Just start pre-installing what you know fits where. And then
it's fairly easy to place the remaining items. Some of us have replaced some
of the support brackets with heavier metal. The install is rather simple once
you get into it
