Just a data point. Today an SL30 received ZUN VOR at 80 NM SW at 11500
MSL. terrain in the area was 5000-7000. Also operaton of the Planelights
HID system did not affect the reception. Also takeoff and landing at
8000 densitly altitude required only about 1500 feet ground roll.
landing was aided by slight NE wind and up hill grade .3%. GRT sport
calculated max power at takeoff to be 73%; achieved 23.5"MP @2700.

How much distance do you have between the nav antenna (say, at the
terminals) and the bulb? And between the terminals and the HID power
supply? Maybe mine are just a little too close. Are you using a wig-wag?
Isn't it a great mountain plane?

not using wig wag; If I recall the distances are about 6-8 inches.
antenna is about mid tip while HID transformer and light assembly are
forward tip. I observed no interference with the landing lights coming
on but wig wag may be different in that the HID may be restarting at
every WIG. I don't know.
Given that there are few data points; every mountain airstrip is a
planning/guessing game. I looked at the book for a Piper Dakota with
derated O540. It is nice to be able to fly in the mountains without the
turbo. I had a turbo C177RG for many years and the turbo allowed almost
any operation in the mountains but there was always the question of the
extra heat and high oil temps. With the big engine, oil temp is of
little concern. My oil cooler is the standard one from the firewall
forward kit. I have drilled off the triangular piece air dams fom the
front cylinders.
After breakin my CHTs usually stay below 360; they were mostly between
360 and 420 during breakin. I now run LOP between 9-13 usually and burn
about 9 gph and true 150 KTAS. CHTs spread about 40 degrees with the
average just above 300F. EGTs have about a 50F spread and average about
1400F.
Yes having a "muscle airplane" is fun.

John,
Your article was very timely for me as I am just starting on my fuel system on
my, -10 and it struck me as needing torque values for the flare fittings. I am
currently running the vent tubing inside the tanks. I ordered the crowfoot
adapter for the torque wrench after reading your post. However, the article did
leave me with a couple of questions.
Should I be making double flare connections? I have the roto flare tool but do
not have the double flare adapters. Does anyone have experience using the roto
tool and double flare adapters?
Are the torque values listed in the article the same for double flares?
Thanks,

Many EAA chapters have a set of race car scales that can be borrowed. This
is really the only way to do it. Make sure you have the plane level.

Wrench tightening was on page 2 of 7 in the attachment. A flare or 12pt
crows foot works better than a standard two contact points. Torqueing
is critical.
During fabrication, some do not cut the tubing perpendicular, some leave
burrs or blemishes. A deburr wheel lightly applied can make a big
difference. Get a 10X inspection lens (you should have one for
sparkplugs anyway) and look with light at the workmanship before
applying the flare. Single flare is most common. Smaller tubes such as
1/4" 0.250" will sometimes get a double for additional flare strength.
The torque values are the force to be applied to the B nut. Most damage
incidents after fabrication are the application of 125%, 150% and
GoodNTight overtorqueing. You would be amazed how many times Foot Pounds
rather than the specified Inch Pounds are applied. that is 1200% Duh!
Pictures demonstrate what deformation the flare incurs when placed under
such abuse. Occasionally the coil tubing vs. the straight tubing can
demonstrate weakness of seams and associated failures.
Good luck with the build. Become familiar with the AC43.13 on the
subject. Bend Radius of rigid tubing, flex tubing and wiring are all
fascinating for the more anal types. (No Side comment requested or
required Rick).

That's okay Rick. Some of us that know John can fill in the descriptors.
After all, those mid shifts where no broken planes are on the ramp they
have nothing better to do than read manuals and argue the fine points of
43-13. Kind of like I asked for interpretation of how a particular
approach was drawn to 3 different retired airline pilots. 2 from same
airline gave same answer. Third from different airline gave opposite
answer. I'm still trying to find the truth in writing.

The little tabs are welded to the back side of the existing tube. I put the
tow bar in place on the nose wheel and marked how much was left protruding
so I could tell where to attach the tabs.
I used a little longer screw and a large area washer to capture the bungee.
The bungee end is just bent in a tight circle for the bolt to go through.
Then I shortened the bungee a couple inches so it holds the stick securely.

I need an alternator bracket for an IO-540-C4B5. I am switching out my 60 AMP B&C

The B&C will be for sale. Works great and has about 238 hours on it.
