Subject: | Overhead Console Question |
I have seen a lot of pictures regarding the full length overhead consoles, but
don't recall seeing how everyone is finishing the aft end of them to the rear
baggage bulkhead.
On my console, the height of it covers some of the screws that hold on the upper
rear baggage panel. Also the console has to have a good seal against this panel,
so I am assuming this now will have to become permanent?
How is everyone sealing the console to the bulkhead? I have mine cut to within
1/8" of the rear panel and was considering filling and fiberglassing it to the
bulkhead, but wanted to understand what others were doing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Mike Kraus

Hey Mike,
Just a thought about sealing to the rear bulkhead. I've been roofing for the past
few weekends and the "new" sealant is polyurethane in a caulk tube. Home
depot is NP-1 (aluminum, black, limestone, white - 181251,181250, 181249), Lowes
is PL roof and flashing sealant (black 68457). This stuff is very similar
to the urethane they put windshields in cars with, creates a flexible bond that's
pretty permanent but could be cut if need be -- better than silicone.
Chemical guys chime in here, I just use the stuff, don't know the technical specs
on it, but it bonds really well to everything. We put in headliner instead
of paint -- don't know about painting polyurethane, but the joint should be inconspicuous.

I used a "d" seal from mcmaster that pushes up against the rear
bulkhead. It makes it possible to slide up the upper bulkhead and
screw in place.

Sean,
Aren't your top screws covered by the overhead console? Or do you
just leave those out?

It pushes pretty tight with the "D" seal so I leave the middle two screws out.
I had two carve two small half circles out on the top of the upper bulkhead so
there would be room for the duct couplers behind the overhead.

Mine will have a flange on it .... will have because I'm just now
getting ready to lay it up.

I don't think 'permanent' is a good idea. I plan on mounting mine with
a couple of screws (# not yet determined) and silicone to seal it. I'm
not sure yet, but I think foam door seal should work real well.
Considering the surface area of the console, a little air pressure can
become significant in PSI.

I wouldn't seal it up permanently .... you may want to remove the
bulkhead at a later date.

Not sure if that's help, but that's the direction I'm heading.

I made a flange at the aft end on the console and used a foam gasket to seal it
up. I placed a few screws through the flange into nutplates on the bulkhead.

I glassed mine to the bulkhead. I then put in a couple of rivets in case vibration
tries to separate the glass from the metal. I wanted a tight seal for the
air conditioning.
I lost a couple of panel screw holes, but I am going to put an additional one on
the center upright. I don't think it will be a problem.
