Subject: | Re: Seat Adjustment Arm |
I purchased mine from Greg Hale a couple of years ago. I remember he
upgraded them due to the arm's breaking as you describe. Greg does
not have them on his website anymore, so I don't think he is selling
them. I noticed that Steve Dinieri at iflyrv10.com has them for sale.
I have been very satisfied with other products I have purchased from
Steve. Great customer service, too.
I really like my seat adjustment arms.

Since I had the knob from the previous arm it was an easy task. I
think the heavier arm will resist my passengers attempts to break it
if I watch them carefully. Works much better that the factory
supplied handle. Also when I installed the arm I added the mini
platenuts as it made it much easier to remove and replace the seat.

PS: I have heard that the supplier ? of the adjustment arm is now
making them out of the heavy wall tubing.

My understanding of this unit is that it's a cold fan- it needs to be blown
at someone versus cooling the area. I am interested in more feedback on what
"Ok" is. Does it actually bring the AZ heat down in the cabin? how much?
The biggest issue I have seen is fitting the coolers into the baggage area-
they are all too big, The other option is having to lug it in through the
doors and into the back, also they tend to have condensation and make the
area they sit on slightly wet.
Thx

I think that I am taking this blog a bit astray from an on site cooler to a portable A/C unit. I could not find the Cabellas link, to a portable tent cooler. Might just be a swamp cooler, but these guys sell a real portable A/C unit not a swamp cooler. http://www.arcticaircooler.com/ Their unit is essentially a heat exchanger that uses ice as the cooling material. They are at OSH every year. I just do not like their rinky-dink Chinese made red nylon covered units.

Maybe a bit astray, but a timely topic ... it's hot here in SC too! Try

I had trouble finding it also, and maybe this isn't the one referred to. It
doesn't get great reviews. It may be time to play with some styrofoam
coolers, pvc pipe, and 12v. fans. Didn't somebody here have a
do-it-yourself one of these a while back? Or maybe I'm thinking of Tim's

As often as this has come up, has anyone pushed Van's to supply
replacements of correct length? Seems like it approaches 100% of
builders, whether push pull or quadrant come up short. Perhaps for
those that have satisfactory lengths, maybe with a sharing of length
values, a consensus could be reached.

What I did was swap them around until maybe you only need to replace the sh
ortest cable.- IIRC, that's what I did.- But yes, Kelley is right, it w
ould be nice if the cable length was a little more accurate... Of course, p
art of the problem is routing and equipment differences (push pull vs, thro
ttle quadrant, etc.)

Bob - I will send you all the information off-line.
Yes. and the methodology to determine cable length is up to each
builder. Tim has it (one - mine) on his website. The supplier of
Cablecraft cables through VANS is Instrument Sales and Service of
Portland, OR. they consistently make the cable to the length requested.
I have posted contact name, number and how to use Weed Wacker line to
make that length determination. The crowd keeps buying parts designed
once over six years ago for a prototype that come in the Finish Kit of
current RV-10s.
Each builder was, is and will always remain the Quality Control on parts
installed into your creation. The problem is QC. When a single point
supplier consistantly provides one length and the builder has correctly
selected a differing length, it is baffling how often this question gets
addressed. the culture is that if VAN sells it, it must be right. It
is the same arguement used on Green fiberglas, Pink Fiberglas and now
grey primed pink fiberglas. Think of the supplier giving you extra
hours of enjoyment to get intimate with a few of those components.
I will print an apology the day VANS begins admitting some parts do not
work as well as intended and embraces making improvements to those few
isolated parts. It is not their problem for the choice of parts
selection. They have done a fine job, created a path of enjoyment for
many and still leave us enough of the journey to feel we actually have
some choices left. And Kelly, NO they cannot be pushed. It is a
corporate culture thing they want you to embrace. You are the builder,
you are QC.

Anyone using a B&C SD-20 alternator on the vacuum pad? I was not getting
any juice on initial engine runs, but I'm wondering if it really has to get
up to "run up" engine speeds to produce much. I did basic trouble shooting
in the hangar and didn't see anything amiss.
What are the experiences of others?

Mine works fine at idle speeds - I test it each time by energizing it
before the primary.

Did you connect it up with a B&C external regulator? I've got an SD-20 as a secondary
on my RV-8 and I find that it works nicely. At idle, however, it definitely
doesn't put out full current. At cruse it does alright, but it can't keep
up if I've got all the lights turned on. This is to be expected, though,
since its only rated at 20amps.

Although my B&C 60amp alternator seems to work fine at lower rpm settings,
the 20 seems to need more revs to offset the load and show a positive curre
nt.

How are you troubleshooting it? It will not output anything until the
main alternator 'fails'. Start the engine, pull the breaker or turn
the main alternator off and the secondary should kick in.

B&C used to have a graph, that plotted AMP output vs RPM for all of
their alternators. I just looked on their web-site and couldn't find it.
My memory of the graph is that the SD-20 doesn't produce it's full 20 am
output until it's turning near max RPM's. My SD-20 Low Voltage light is
lit when the engine is at idle. I have a check list item on my run-up to
check that it extinguishes when I go through my run up.
