It is about 15 miles away. I am planning to hire a flatbed car hauler to take it there for me. I am down to installing the panel and final assembly. My question is, where would the best place be on the airframe to connect the winch to pull the airframe onto the tilted flatbed? Or should it be winched at all? It seems it would be fairly heavy to push it on safely. The engine and prop are installed. I've see car haulers that get the slope really shallow, and others like climbing a hill. Either way, if you put a rope bridle on the steps and use the winch, that should be OK. If the wheel pants aren't installed, the nose gear should be OK too, as long as the plane doesn't get hung up going on the trailer. Having a few friends push is always a good thing. When we put my Pitts (assembled) on the flat-bed for the Christmas light parade, we just pushed it up on the trailer. No winch required. See the pix above. I found that using 8' ramps, the fuse (along with engine) was surprising easy to roll onto a flat bed trailer that stood about 2' off the ground. No winch was necessary. It took 4 people, (one with arm arm in a sling!) to roll the fuse up the ramp on onto the trailer in a matter of seconds. I guess it all has to do with moving an object up an inclined plane (I guess I should have paid more attention in Physics class!). We nailed blocks fore and aft of the wheels and used heavy duty tire down straps with tensioners to secure the fuse. It is hard to see, but the straps on upper end of the gear legs are secured to the opposite side of the trailer. They cross under the fuse and seemed to hold everything very secure. The fuse did not budge at all during the 60 mile move. If you haven't already, confirm the width of the trailer you are going to use. I had to search for several days to find a rental trailer that was over 8' wide. Mine was 8' 3". The -10 wheels are surprisingly far apart. I made double-ramps that were 8'-10' long each, so that I'd have a very shallow slope to climb, over about 15' or so. Once on the trailer I just strapped it down with chocks by strapping the mains and nose gear to the trailer very tight with cam straps. It rides really well, actually. I put it in the baggage and pump air over the back seat.( no need for case of oil back there) Here in Texas It's almost required. My wife and I flew to Gulf Shores, AL. from Houston TX. on Friday morning and just got back. It works good on the ground but not that good in the air due to leak age of air out the plane. We use it for cranking and taxing and climb to cool air. Does a good job. -I use gallon and 1/2 gallon milk jugs frozen and then put in a bag of ic e. Today we put in Three bags of ICE and still had some when we got back to HOUSTON, (2hr 48 min),but as I said you only use it for about 30 min on ta xi and climb and then on the way back in for landing. I find if you use it continuously It lasts about an hr. -I did just order another Hose a little longer (3FT)so it gets closer to the front seats. -I also ordered a 24 to 12 volt converter to try it in my C310. -Hope this helps. When it's all moved don't be afraid to post what worked and what didn't. I don't have the towbar yet, so I guess I need to start there, but I was leaning towards using the nose gear and the winch. I think it's very good for someone embarking on such a project -- I used it as a preview of what I was in for when I went to Alexander Tech Center for my course on building, and I've used it since to review techniques I learned there. It was very easy for me to winch up using the tail tie-down. As others said, measure the bed width of the truck. The place where I rented this truck had 2 tilt-beds, but only one was wide enough, and just then barely. -------- Bob Turner RV-10 QB Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=302740#302740 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/100_0840_209.jpg ________________________________ Message 13 ____________________________________ Time: 04:48:17 PM PST US From: Chris Klugewicz Subject: RV10-List: Re:RV-10 tail kit *SOLD* I have a buyer for the tail kit I posted earlier today.
