Yes the Kiwis are a great aviation country also...........
My more important point is that we must work together to preserve our freedom to
fly (every day) from the pointy pencil green weenies that will take our freedoms
from us. Just last month the weenies at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency
tried to impose draconian restrictions on seaplane operations at Lake Tahoe.
Only through the efforts a small group of Northern Calif. and Nevada airmen was
the initiative quashed.

Mike Seager also had me put 50 lbs of lead shot/ sand in the baggage area to improve
balance and trim on the first flights.

Subject: | Fwd: Foreflight Question |
As a follow-up to my earlier post, I flew home last night using Foreflight a
nd got a different result. If you recall, on my maiden flight using Forefli
ght, when I lost my cell phone signal (still had gps signal) a "cannot conne
ct to Foreflight" window popped up and I could not get it to disappear. I w
ould close the program, restart it and it would work fine until the pop up c
ame up again. Same result. On this flight, when I lost the cell phone sign
al, the pop up came up, and a single tap anywhere on the screen made the pop
up go away and the program worked fine...... Originally no matter what I d
id, the pop up would not disappear.....
Not sure why the difference, but I was very happy with it's performance yest
erday, as others have expressed.
Thanks

Subject: | Re: AC cooling chest |
Hey Guys,
Here are some numbers. It was 110 degrees in my extended cab pick up this AM.
I put 2 gal of water and 2 gal of ice (from the fridge ice maker) in the cooler.
After 10 minutes of running the cooler, the ice was totally melted, cabin
temp was 80, exit air from the cooler was 53, water temp was 45. I think with
maybe one gal of water and much more bag ice, it would last much longer. Very
comfortable, and not bad for a little experiment.
It concerns me that when I pulled the plug out of the truck socket, it was more
than warm to the touch. I dont have a way to measure the amps, but the voltage
on the instrument cluster didnt vary when turning the cooler on and off (had
the motor running). Maybe small truck wiring to the socket? The socket itself?
The male plug has a 7.5 amp fuse built into it, and it was fine. Ill be
sure to check that heat issue when I plug it into the plane.
The air circulating over the ice/water didnt seem to be an issue sure felt cool
and dry and the heater core was dripping condensate. But maybe later Ill try
floating a thin piece of styrofoam on top to help separate the water/air
Ill post more numbers from the plane later in the week.
Later, - Lew

Sounds good Lew. That should give us enough time to get to cooler air temperatures
then dump the 30 lbs of water overboard. Add a pull string to flush it out
the bottom. You would definitely need something like that today...97F right now.

Subject: | Re: Foreflight Question |
Hi Kelly,
Once the GPS chip has a useable set of signals, the cell connection makes
no contribution to location accuracy. With enough sky and sats visible,
you should routinely seen 5 m accuracy. I don't know if any of the current
software is written to take advantage of the extra features of an external
(BT) GPS yet - its a good question.
Apparently, none of the software I've tried use the built in compass in the
iPad either.
As for SkyCharts, I've been using it on my phone for many months and
more recently on the iPad. I find it a bit finicky when it comes to double
tapping the screen to get the wx. I usually have to try a few times. I would
think making the tap radius a pixel or two wider would help.
The Foreflight system is much easier to get to AFD info and plates without
fussing.
This weekend when it was nearly 100F on Long Island, I took the iPad
for another ride in the Europa. I laid it flat, face up on the pax seat
when I turned on to the active. The yellow triangle of heat stroke
appeared in 4 minutes. The case was 122F by my lab-cert IR temp probe.
I haven't tried the ipad in actual yet, but then, if its cloudy and cool,
maybe I can see the screen?

I encourage anyone getting ready for the first flight to go to the EAA
webinars and listen through the "first flight in your homebuilt", in there
there is reference to fuel, oil, flight plans.. etc..
In the meantime AC90-89 is a great source for the flight test period. It
states 4 times the amount of fuel needed for the first flight- I take that
to mean if I plan a 20-30 minute flight at 15GPH that would mean I need 8GPH
for the first flight times 4 which is 24 Gallons.
Start on page 33 of the AC 90-89a, gives all the details we all need for the
prep and actual flights.
Pascal
No where near needing to think about the first flight but it's never too
early to start anyway!

rocks! Don't know what I'd do without it. My plane would probably fall out
of the sky! ;-)

Subject: | Re: Full tanks for first flight? |
On my RV-10 first flight back in July of 2007, as I went to full throttle I found
myself mightily surprised when at full forward (climb pitch, flat pitch) on
the RPM knob my RV-10 with a new fresh-from-the-factory IO-540 would only turn
2400 rpm, on a 95 degree day lifting off from an uphill runway. The plane felt
like it was 'lugging' due to climbing with prop in cruise configuration, but
it did climb about 800 ft per minute with half fuel, 50 pounds of sand in the
baggage compartment, and just me (at 170 lbs) aboard. It was pretty exciting
(in a negative way, given that my other plane at the time was a 2000+ fpm climbing
RV-7A) and I was very glad to have a relatively light airplane for that
first time around the patch. After adjusting the prop governor up to 2700 rpm
dynamic for the second flight (still wasn't much more than 2400 static) the
climb rate was up to about 1800 fpm the same afternoon.
Half fuel sounds just about perfect for a first flight from my perspective. As
old time EAA's say, "Keep it light and it will keep you happy." Next first flight
will be the RV-12 later this summer, and ten of twenty possible gallons
in the tank should be just right.

Any reason not to? W&B seems reasonable.

Subject: | Re: Trying to be Politically correct - 4th of July |
This weekend I had the pleasure of meeting some new friends from Bosnia. We
invited them to a 4th of July hanger party for food and to watch fireworks
from the nearby fair grounds. They were amazed at the number of people who
owned and flew there own aircraft, and the pride we take in them. They told
me they knew of no one in Bosnia who owned and flew there own single engine
plane.
Let's keep our freedom. The more laws we have the less free we are.
