Subject: | Re: Door Latch Redux |
Before first flight I installed the stock Van's safety latch.
Installation wasn't very hard -- I just had to be careful because my
plane was already painted.
I now have 80+ hours on the plane, and I like the safety latch. The
safety latch gives a very satisfying "thunk" when it engages... such
that I know the door is properly aligned and ready for the main pins to
engage. There's never any question about pin misalignment, no worry
about the pins missing the guides and gouging the paint.
When working around the plane (mx work, loading, whatever) on a breezy
ramp, it is very easy to close the door and push to engage the safety
latch, without having to reach and turn the handle. This protects the
door from popping open and getting damaged by wind, yet leaves the door
easy to open to complete the mx work, loading, etc.
And the price is right.

Convenience is a plus. I have my plane in a hanger and do not lock it but I like
to have the door closed (mice, dust, etc). It is easy because you can just latch
it without engaging the pins, and it is easy to open in the hanger also without
having to throw the handle.

For some time we have been experiencing vibration of the nose wheel at
the end of a landing when just about stopped. We recently increased the
breakout force and reduced inflation in the nose tire to 38 psi. We also
relaxed back pressure when braking at the end of the landing run. these
steps seemed to have cured the problem.

I had some difficult vibration to track down till we lifted the nose wheel
and shook the front gear only to find the entire gear leg was vibrating due
to a loose fitting bushing. Not too exciting video here:

We had a custom bushing milled and it solved the uncommon vibration vs. the
standard Vans nose wheel vibration issues.
Check how solid the nose gear leg is when un-weighted if you cannot solve
your vibration issues.

N52KS parted company with the ground this afternoon around 3:30. The
weatherman's predictions of rain and overcast all day did not hold out
and we had a beautiful day with favorable winds.
Flew 30 minutes in the first flight. Everything looked good afterwards,
and the weather was so nice we did another hour before the day was done.
No major squawks, just a heavy left wing we'll have to look at.
See you at Oshkosh . . . 2011.

Congrats.
I also had a heavy left wing...I re-rigged the flaps, and ailerons...still
heavy. Then, threw a couple of hundred pounds in the right seat..no more
heavy left wing...
Full right tank is always in order when you fly solo...burn out the left
and keep it low.
