Yep these steps from Vans are problematic, A Friend had his step on a
RV-7 fail also. The welds are not strong enough!!

My left-side rear passenger was getting out of the plane after me and
when he was on the step it broke at the upper weld. Only slight damage
to the skin when the step pressed against the side before it broke
completely off. Going to half to get access to the bolt to remove the
remaining piece and repair it. I had already riveted the baggage floor
on when the discussion began on this list about putting an access cover
so you could get to the bolt but wish I had done that before. If I was
starting over I think I would not only but an access cover there but put
a nutplate there instead of a lock nut or maybe weld a nut on the bottom
of the receptacle in the plane.

Mike, did you trim the edge of the doubler adjacent to the outer floor rib, or
did you run the doubler between rib and floor?

Wish I had done that. I bought 2 access plates from Vans but got lazy
and decided to "follow the plans". Perhaps a llusy excuse in this case.
Has anyone installed the plates after finishing the steps and floor?
Comment on difficulty - the timing is still good.

Right Geoff, wrong web site. http://www.aerosportproducts.com features all the RV-10 interior products.
Aerosport Modeling is Geoff's other business. Although the modeling site is rather
interesting. It will be quickly apparent that dealing with plastics and
composite materials is something in which he has quite a bit of experience.

Attached is a photo that Robin Marks took as we completed final prep to fly the
plane home from paint. Many thanks to Robin for taking the time to fly with
me both before and during the trip.
It was fun to see Robin use his G900x experience to fly with my OP Technologies
(Aerosonic) displays. He did cheat some in that when he found himself outside
the HITS boxes he would just hit the direct to button again and refresh the
route!!
Mine is not as fast as Robins on the ground or in climb, but I think I can keep
up with him once we get to altitude.
Now I just need to make fly the plane!! 29.4 hours and counting....

Yep, I agree. My friend across the hanger row had both of his steps crack
at the upper weld; I had the passenger weld crack at the same spot on my
'nine'. I removed mine (no small feat --- address this possibility during
construction for access!!!) took mine to a real professional welder. Told
him I wanted a gusset added for strength on the repair weld. He studied it
for awhile and said he wouldn't advise it. Something about transfer of
force and it would just crack again somewhere else. He rewelded it and said
I probably wouldn't have any further cracks, and I haven't.
Called Van's and guess what? They hadn't heard of the problem.

Hey Jearl (Luther),
Very Nice! How about a picture with the doors closed, full angle with
wingtips, etc. What kind of paint, painted in pieces or totally assembled,
is that the permanent tail number (size seems small) ???

FYI, I cheat on the G900X too!
The plane looks amazing and another testament to Vans design and Jearl=92s
hard work.
This is a camera phone photo. We will get some quality air to air photos
sometime soon.
Keep building, it=92s worth it!

Subject: | MT prop Governor set screw |
This was the post you were looking for.
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Jim Ayers <lessdragprod@aol.com>
Subject: Re: RV10-List: MT prop Governor set screw
If the arm is removed and replaced in exactly the same orientation, nothing.
But if you were to do that, why take it apart in the first place.
MT Propeller says it is a "bad thing" to just change the location of
the governor arm on the splined shaft.
Of course, MT Propeller and MT Propeller USA do this themselves when
they set up the governor. But they each have a $50,000 governor flow
bench to set the governor properly.
BTW, your MT Governor can be shipped to MT Propeller USA to be set
properly for the IO-540 engine you have.
Van's Aircraft sells new Lycomng engines which are wide deck IO-540
engines with a 0.947:1 gear ratio to drive the governor.
Van's aircraft sells new MT governors set for the narrow deck IO-540
engine which has a 0.895:1 gear ratio.
So the new MT governor on the new Lycoming IO-540 engine will only
allowabout 2550 RPM maximum.
MT Propeller USA can set up you new MT governor from Van's Aircraft so
it will be very close to 2700 RPM maximum.
Please remember that the propeller low pitch stop should limit the
engine to between 2600 and 2650 RPM on a full throttle static runup.
Changing the governor settingshouldnot change the full throttle
static RPM if the low pitch propeller.stop is set properly.

Don't remove the governor arm!!!!!!!!!
Cut the safety wire on the six screws behjnd the governor arm.
LOOSEN the six screws.
Rotate the governor arm and stop assembly to the position you want.
Tighten the six screws.
Safety wire the six screws.

ON the top of the MT governor is a set screw which allow the servo arm
to be reoriented to the correct angle per different installations.
Seing that MT is a German company, I thought that the set screw was a
metric allen wrench. I appears that non of the metric allen wrenches I
purchased are of the correct size. Also, by chance I thought that it
might be a star drive and it isn't that either, at least not in
standard sizes.
Does anyone know what tool will losen this set screw and is the set
screw standard clockwise rotation for tightening and counterclockwise
for loosening.??
Thanks,
John

Subject: | FS: Trutrack Pitch and Roll Servos |
Link to post on VAF with photo.
http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=65281
I have TruTrak servos for both roll and pitch for sale, which were originally to
be paired with the Digiflight IIVS head, eventually. Due to a change in plans,
these servos are no longer needed. The servos were mounted in the -10 project,
but they have not flown yet. The sale includes the original Trutrak box, foam
packaging, color print install "instructions" (basically just color prints)
and mounting hardware for the right wing and the pitch mount.
I am asking $1,970 or OBO, which includes shipping. Trutrak list is $2,250.
Thanks for looking, and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
