Hi John:
I order everything from Aircraft Spruce.. Don't really have a conversion
chart but most everything has dual designations there. Type in AN509 and the
listing comes up for MS24694. From there you can see the second column
contains the older AN509 dash number. The -8R10 looks to be MS24694-S7.
Hope that helps out some.

Yes guys I have been doing this orderring of all different bolts and
screw....but, and as is the case these are 8R10s, I have 8R7s.
My finishing kit did not contain these screws.
I'll place another order and wait a few days. It not like I am doing
anything you all haven't already done.
What I find difficult to do it order through Spruce because they use a
different system of numbering. Anyone have a conversion chart?
Thanks

Way to go Rob!
I know you are both proud. Getting the wife involved is the best option
(providing she wants). My wife became pretty good at shooting rivets while I
got in the difficult areas to buck. She seemed to really enjoy being part of
the project.
Congrats!

Hi, all... after three years, six months, and one week, our RV-10 finally
had its first flight on Saturday! Rob took off from runway 34L at Paine
Field, climbed to 3000 feet, circled the airport for 15 minutes, then landed
uneventfully. Despite some nerves, the flight was a success. Only 39.75
more hours to go until the test period is complete and Kelly can ride, too!
Our RV-10 is powered by an Aero Sport Power IO-540-D4A5 (260 hp), Silver
Hawk EX FI system, with a slick mag on bottom and Light Speed Plasma III on
top. The instrument panel has a Dynon D100 EFIS, Dynon D120 EMS, Garmin GNS
430 GPS, and panel-mounted Garmin GPSMAP 696. Interior by Flightline
Interiors. Our tail number is 819K: 8/19 is our wedding anniversary, and K
is for "Kelly" (according to her).

P.S. (from Rob) The airplane was definitely my passion, but there's no way I
could have done it without Kelly. She put up with more than I could ever
ask for and kept me sane during the low points of the building, but she also
took it a step further. These pictures really show it was a team effort.

Subject: | Re: seat rails and AN509 8R10 screws |
But that's what I mean....I ordered like 8R7's, 8R8's, 8R9's, 8R10's, 8R...
If you prepare and order some additional sizes above and below, you'll be r
eady. I found many places where a slightly longer screw was nicer, or where
I had some reason to switch. And for some locations I used stainless screw
s instead of the Cad plated, depending on what it was for.
You'll want to probably replace ALL of the wingtip and fairing screws with s
tainless, and leave them unpainted if you don't like chipped paint screws.
Do the same with AN bolts, especially 3's and 4's....get some additional siz
es. For general hardware, I found it better to just empty the Vans baggies i
nto parts bins all sorted out, and then order a pile of replacement and addi
tional hardware so I had a more complete assortment of hardware. At this po
int I rarely need to order anything. It promotes good maintenance because y
ou feel happy to replace a screw when it's in worsening condition, rather th
an reusing it because you didn't have one.
Buy 100 packs of cotter pins too....especially the ones for the axles.
And washers, and nuts both nylock and all-metal. You'll also find that in d
oing the engine you don't always do things 100% identically to other people,
so you'll want extra Adel clamps, and non-nylon nuts in the engine compartm
ent. Washers too of course. The list is long but if you're going to be you
r own mechanic later you may as well spend the $200-300 on extra hardware...
.even some sizes not in the plans. If it were a rare size, I ordered 20, bu
t common I just went for 100 packs for the discount. You can usually go up a
size if you need to, in a pinch.

Since were on the subject of seat rails I'm assuming some of you are having the
same problem as me with the seat being very difficult to move as tome goes on.
For those that have this same problem have you come up with an easy solution?
Boy during this colder period it's almost impossible to get them to slide.

One thing that was a mistake was lubing the rails with white lithium
grease. Over time and with cold temps it made the situation worse. The
teflon? is on the seat riders.
Had to clean out all the grease, they seem to work best without lube or
perhaps some very light type. Have not tried that yet. If the tracks
are the least bit out of alignment the problem is obviously worse.

Thanks Bill. I referenced bag 1435 in my kit which is located in my "quickb
uild Fuselage Kit." My Firewall Foreward kits have bags in the 500's.
Indeed=2C this bag 1435 does contain the AN509 8R10 screws but there are on
ly #20. That would leave me five screws per rail.
Weird how Van's inventory with the kits ship=2C but it is an wonder it work
s at all.
BTW not only have I been orderring extra of everything=2C but also now have
the plastic Plano boxes to label and sort them.

It's nothing too special...I'm not sure of the brand, maybe
"Gunk" or something...it's sold under so many brands.
It's just "Silicone Spray". It's not a normal oil lube
but real thin. I just sprayed a paper towel and then
wiped it onto the rails. You don't need to use much.
And, you don't want to get it on anything that you'll
want to paint later....but otherwise it's no big deal.
Don't use too much...you don't want to attract tons of
dirt and stuff.

a real aviation supply house (Spruce)is first choice for the extra
hardware but when they don't stock it, try McMaster Carr for example,
for the cap screws for nose wheel stops and Wheel pant outboard "1/4"
type stainless.

But that's what I mean....I ordered like 8R7's, 8R8's, 8R9's, 8R10's,
8R... If you prepare and order some additional sizes above and below,
you'll be ready. I found many places where a slightly longer screw was
nicer, or where I had some reason to switch. And for some locations I
used stainless screws instead of the Cad plated, depending on what it
was for.
You'll want to probably replace ALL of the wingtip and fairing screws
with stainless, and leave them unpainted if you don't like chipped paint
screws.
Do the same with AN bolts, especially 3's and 4's....get some
additional sizes. For general hardware, I found it better to just empty
the Vans baggies into parts bins all sorted out, and then order a pile
of replacement and additional hardware so I had a more complete
assortment of hardware. At this point I rarely need to order anything.
It promotes good maintenance because you feel happy to replace a screw
when it's in worsening condition, rather than reusing it because you
didn't have one.
Buy 100 packs of cotter pins too....especially the ones for the axles.
And washers, and nuts both nylock and all-metal. You'll also find
that in doing the engine you don't always do things 100% identically to
other people, so you'll want extra Adel clamps, and non-nylon nuts in
the engine compartment. Washers too of course. The list is long but if
you're going to be your own mechanic later you may as well spend the
$200-300 on extra hardware....even some sizes not in the plans. If it
were a rare size, I ordered 20, but common I just went for 100 packs for
the discount. You can usually go up a size if you need to, in a pinch.

What I find difficult to do it order through Spruce because they use

One thing to check for is that your seat
Rails are not being distorted once you
Screw them down. Both sides on my

I believe the plans talk about this. I have
A .02 shim on the one side and without it
The seat can will hardly move.

. If you prepare and order some additional sizes above and below, you'll b
e ready. I found many places where a slightly longer screw was nicer, or wh
ere I had some reason to switch. And for some locations I used stainless sc
rews instead of the Cad plated, depending on what it was for.

stainless, and leave them unpainted if you don't like chipped paint screws.
> Do the same with AN bolts, especially 3's and 4's....get some additional s
izes. For general hardware, I found it better to just empty the Vans baggie
s into parts bins all sorted out, and then order a pile of replacement and a
dditional hardware so I had a more complete assortment of hardware. At this
point I rarely need to order anything. It promotes good maintenance becau
se you feel happy to replace a screw when it's in worsening condition, rathe
r than reusing it because you didn't have one.

n doing the engine you don't always do things 100% identically to other peop
le, so you'll want extra Adel clamps, and non-nylon nuts in the engine compa
rtment. Washers too of course. The list is long but if you're going to be y
our own mechanic later you may as well spend the $200-300 on extra hardware.
...even some sizes not in the plans. If it were a rare size, I ordered 20, b
ut common I just went for 100 packs for the discount. You can usually go up
a size if you need to, in a pinch.

When I received my kit, I scanned in the entire inventory document using a text
converter, and then cleaned it up using MS Word, where it is easily searchable.
I then just put the bags in plastic drawers purchase from the aviation section
of Lowes. The drawers are numbered with the bag number. When I need a specific
part I just punch it in to the work area laptop, and it tells me which
bag its in. Vans told me they were in the process of converting all of the antique
inventory forms to Word. They sent me the QB Fuse list, which is all they
had done at the time. It sure makes it easier to find stuff. I never did
anthing more than a bag inventory. I did find that I was short 300 of the CS4-4s,
which Vans sent me ASAP, no questions.
