Congratulations to a local guy. We have never met but I hope to remedy
that some time. I am just down the road in Puyallup and a couple of
years behind you. We have two RV-10s in process here. I am the slow
one. One of our chapter members, Charlie, was your DAR according to
your pictures. Hopefully our weather will cooperate with your fly-off
plans, but this time of year it is not too promising.
Hoping for smooth air and blue skies. :-)

I just did a little work on my pedal blocks this weekend:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/upgrades/20090503/index.html
I decided since I had nothing better to do, I'd pull them and drill
some holes in them, repaint them, put anti-skid on them, and
just in general freshen them up. I took some photos while
they are out, so you can better see how they were made. I
tweaked the write-up a little too. These were meant to be
a temporary, proof-of-concept thing, but they're working out
so good I decided to just leave them, even if they aren't
cosmetically perfect.
The total weight is something around 2.5lbs for the pair.
I could lighten them quite a bit more I'm sure, but I don't
think I'll even try. Mounting is a breeze, with the dowels
and big washers.

Tim,
Thanks for the update. Mine work fine but aren't that easy to mount.
My next set will be lighter and have an easier mount.
Regards,
Alan

Yeah, I would think that 1/8" aluminum could be fine, if it had
some good cross bracing internally. I don't see why it
wouldn't work.
I wasn't too worried about going with wood though...wood was
often touted as being an "ideal material" for airplanes because
it's light and strong...and in the case of these blocks, it
was just simple to work with. I would think that someone could
use balsa blocks and just coat them with glass, too, as
another option. The ability to drill dowels into it was
really the thing I liked the best.
For aluminum blocks, I'd think you could put some aluminum
cylinders that bolt on in place of where the dowels go, too.
I'm not sure how weight would compare, if made in a
more ideal way. I'm guessing I could probably cut the
weight of the wood ones down to 1.5lbs per pair if I tried,
but I'd need to start by using better wood, glued nice,
cut nice, and then route out the guts in a manner that
took out more material but kept some good structure. It
would turn it into a 8 hour project, whereas I did these
in maybe an hour. Still, it would be fun to play
with some day if I didn't have other things I
want to do first.

I been thinking about Tim's response here and I know the truth regarding
what he is up to.
Tim's wife says, "Honey, you have more extra bolts, washers, nuts and screw
s
then you could ever use on our plane."
His reply, "Yah, I was thinking about that and I would hate for them to go
to waste, I think I should start another project, it will be done once the
kids move out and we only need two seats."
Very clever fox!!!!

But that's what I mean....I ordered like 8R7's, 8R8's, 8R9's, 8R10's, 8R...
If you prepare and order some additional sizes above and below, you'll be
ready. I found many places where a slightly longer screw was nicer, or
where I had some reason to switch. And for some locations I used stainless
screws instead of the Cad plated, depending on what it was for.
You'll want to probably replace ALL of the wingtip and fairing screws with
stainless, and leave them unpainted if you don't like chipped paint screws.
Do the same with AN bolts, especially 3's and 4's....get some additional
sizes. For general hardware, I found it better to just empty the Vans
baggies into parts bins all sorted out, and then order a pile of replacemen
t
and additional hardware so I had a more complete assortment of hardware. A
t
this point I rarely need to order anything. It promotes good maintenance
because you feel happy to replace a screw when it's in worsening condition,
rather than reusing it because you didn't have one.
Buy 100 packs of cotter pins too....especially the ones for the axles.
And washers, and nuts both nylock and all-metal. You'll also find that in
doing the engine you don't always do things 100% identically to other
people, so you'll want extra Adel clamps, and non-nylon nuts in the engine
compartment. Washers too of course. The list is long but if you're going
to be your own mechanic later you may as well spend the $200-300 on extra
hardware....even some sizes not in the plans. If it were a rare size, I
ordered 20, but common I just went for 100 packs for the discount. You can
usually go up a size if you need to, in a pinch.

Yes guys I have been doing this orderring of all different bolts and
screw....but, and as is the case these are 8R10s, I have 8R7s.
My finishing kit did not contain these screws.
I'll place another order and wait a few days. It not like I am doing
anything you all haven't already done.
What I find difficult to do it order through Spruce because they use a
different system of numbering. Anyone have a conversion chart?
Thanks

Subject: | rudder pedal extensions |
Tim,
I am finalizing design and fabrication of pedal systems for RV's. Extensions
look like an option I should consider.
I have a couple other product ideas I be offering soon.
