I too had to re-build one tab. I would carefully inspect the tab itself for trueness.

Could someone with the rudder pedal extensions measure the distance they
stick back and possibly sent me offline a better picture or drawing of
them? My pedals are aft mounted and I'm 6' 4", so I may need them, but
at any rate, sounds like a cool project for my new mill!

Looking down the edge of the elevator, it looks straight all the way up to the
trim tab. Then, the whole trim tab appear two slant upward.
To be honest, the trim tabs have always bothered me and I was hoping I could one
day install new ones. I had a very hard time squeezing my hand in and bucking
the rivets and I would up using pop rivets in places. Is it hard to mount
new trim tabs on?

I'm going to have to reroute my flight plan today and
instead of going to SLC, where enroute surface winds
will be G50 along the way, I can get a better ride.
That may place me somewhere around Lubboc KLBB
late tonight.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good lower-fuel
price airport, or at least one that has a hotel
that picks you up, in that area? We just need
a quick stayover and have to get going early in
the morning again, so something real close to the
airport would be perfect.
Any advice? I just don't want to get near the
mountains when the winds are going to be nasty
at altitude.

No, it's easy to do. I ended up doing it about a month before my first
flight, but you could probably even fly it like that for a while until you
feel like rebuilding it.

The scene at Sun 'n Fun at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport turned to chaos
on Thursday as strong storms hammered the show site, flipping airplanes,
knocking out power to the exhibit halls and collapsing a building, trapping
dozens of people inside. The National Weather Service reported confirmed
tornadoes in the area, and said more than 70 people were trapped inside the
collapsed building at the Sun 'n Fun show site. Even though the first couple
of days of the show were largely storm free, the week continued to be
defined by heavy rain that soaked the grounds the day before the festivities
started and kept thousands of airplanes from arriving in Lakeland. Despite
the slow start to the week, some vendors reported doing good business even
with the smaller crowds. Launch events by Aspen, Piper, Garmin and Cessna
generated a good deal of buzz at the show, and as the week progressed and
the scattered areas of decent weather surfaced, the mood of show goers
seemed decidedly upbeat. But on Thursday morning show goers awoke to heavy
rains and threatening skies before a massive storm cell swept through the
area late in the morning. A tornado warning for the area remained in effect
on Thursday afternoon.

Violent Storm Hits Sun 'n Fun Fly-In
March 31, 2011
by Scott Simmons, Glenn Pew
Damage at Lakeland, Florida's Sun 'n Fun air show may be in the millions
after a storm blew through late Thursday morning, damaging aircraft and
structures on the ground. Everyone has been accounted for on-site, and there
are no reports of serious injuries. Initial reports on cable news channels
indicated that 70 people were trapped under a collapsed roof, but those
reports appear to have been unfounded. Lakeland Police Department's Terri
Smith, whom AVweb spoke with on-site, informs us that no building have
collapsed. (Some outlets are reporting that a tent collapse had temporarily
trapped those inside.)
Storms were still moving through the area after the initial onslaught.

I'm in the campground now. I think the power is still out. A small tornado must
have passed through, because there is a row where tents & planes are mangled.
I think all 4 aircams were destroyed & 3 of 5 planes in the Zenith booth.
2 Citations & a Caravan flipped. There are 3 air campers in a pile as well as
several flipped planes out on the flight line. Not many rv's damaged that I
am aware of. Lots of tents & canopies destroyed. The whole ECI & Phillips 66
tent is gone. The whole place is wet. Some of the hangars had standing water
in them.
They kicked everybody off the grounds to prevent chances of looting. The campground
is very wet, but mostly in tact. Some campers have damage. I saw one pop-up
with the top blown off. Lots if tents are collapsed or torn. Hopefully
the rain will pass soon & we will be able to start cleaning the place up.
We lost a Zenith 801, but the Maverick is fine. Van's planes made it through with
very little damage.

Tim,
If you go the southern route I would suggest Pecos TX for an
overnight...relatively cheap fuel, motels within 1/2 mile of FBO,
courtesy car, etc. I've been there several times. It will keep you as
far from high terrain as you can while headed east. If you don't make
it that far, Demming NM is acceptable and at least one motel picks up.
Haven't done Lubbock. Plainview is a bit north, has good FBO and
motels within a mile. Most of the TX panhandle is always windy, with
15-20kts being "calm wind".
The only high terrain on that route is the Guadalupe Pass(approx 7500
ft) south of Carlsbad. If winds are blowing there you might get 15 min
of turbulence, and then terrain falls away quickly to about 4000 ft
elevation. Whatever you do, stay away from White Sands missile range,
even if the restricted area is cold. Went over it once, and
encountered the only true severe clear air turbulence ever
encountered.

Cool, thanks! I'm enroute to Lubbock now....get to see Russ Daves. So if I can
make it through this front, I should be ok for today with the bumps. The ipad
has been pretty cool to play with today.

Jesse, thank you for the first-hand report. Sorry to hear about your plane. I'm
hoping to hear all RV-10's at least are fine.

I think all 4 aircams were destroyed & 3 of 5 planes in the Zenith booth.
2 Citations & a Caravan flipped. There are 3 air campers in a pile as well
as several flipped planes out on the flight line. Not many rv's damaged that
I am aware of. Lots of tents & canopies destroyed. The whole ECI & Phillips
66 tent is gone. The whole place is wet. Some of the hangars had standing water
in them.

is very wet, but mostly in tact. Some campers have damage. I saw one
pop-up with the top blown off. Lots if tents are collapsed or torn. Hopefully
the rain will pass soon & we will be able to start cleaning the place up.

>> Damage at Lakeland, Florida's Sun 'n Fun air show may be in the millions after
a storm blew through late Thursday morning, damaging aircraft and structures
on the ground. Everyone has been accounted for on-site, and there are no reports
of serious injuries. Initial reports on cable news channels indicated that
70 people were trapped under a collapsed roof, but those reports appear to
have been unfounded. Lakeland Police Department's Terri Smith, whom AVweb spoke
with on-site, informs us that no building have collapsed. (Some outlets are
reporting that a tent collapse had temporarily trapped those inside.)

Seems like ours made it through OK, need to do a through inspection to know for
sure. Had "Claw" tie downs, they gave a bit but did not give up. If you have
ever been down here you know how sandy the soil is. I can't even count the
number of the thread in dog leash type tie downs that were on aircraft that didn't
do so well. After the first wave of bad weather they said an even bigger
storm was coming, so we bought a second set to help hold it in place. Thankfully
the storm did not materialize.
The wind blew so hard it stripped all of the paint off of our airplane, well at
least that is the excuse we can use for a while for not being painted yet.
My heart goes out to all of those who lost their labor of love to the storm, first
sploshkosh now this...

www.grassrootsnews.tv has a good video of the storm (including a clip of adam from TruTrak and Alex D). not sure if the earlier email made it to the list.
I dont know of any RV-10's damaged except minor wingtip damage to the van's plane.
