Dick,
Look at the Harbor Freight camouflage winch with remote control for $100, discounted
to $70. Works well. I think Tim has this winch also.

I was going to go the winch route and then decided that the eclectic tow bar
would be better. Three years later and a hanger change and I am glad I went
with the tow bar, a wench would not work very good in my new hanger. My
first hanger was a T hanger with the ramp sloping out from the front. My
new hanger is square 60X60 and depending on what else I have in the hanger
at the time, the plane gets moved around.
I know this does not answer your question directly, but it is something to
think about.
There is a big difference in cost between the winch and the eclectic tow
bar.......

Every time I suggest a hangar wench, my wife vetoes the concept. ;-)
She thinks there is a mistress nearby the airport anyway, since I spend
so much time there.

Maybe someone will still have the magazine, but there was pretty good article on
building an electric towbar yourself not too long again in Sport Aviation (I
think).

I agree, I am a wuss. But, north facing hanger in the winter made it almost
impossible to do it by myself.
Now that I have it....I would not do without, just makes it so much easier.
I leave it hooked up all the time........except when I fly of course......

Gary,
Here are some snips from the manual. I believe on the system status page
(not sure the exact name of the page) it also shows the version number.
If you have not updated the system recently Garmin released version 09 on
4/5/2011. I think version 08 was released very early in 2011.

I built my own based on an article in Kitplanes called something like "Build
a tow Bar for $10". Mine ran more than that, got the tires with bearings
from Harbor Freight, a friend gave me a 24V gearmoter, batteries from
Walmart and the 1" square tube for the frame from Lowes. The 24V motor was
nice as it gave me 2 speeds. An over-center link keeps it clamped to the
front wheel. I've since added LED lights for night use. About $150 I think.
The Kitplanes article guy used a windshield wiper motor and made his own
sprockets.

I did shoot Dick an offline reply, but Jim is right.
I have the wireless remote Harbor Freight winch. It
does do the job well for me when it's icy. It isn't
what I'd recommend to someone who needs to use one
every day though. It's a slow winch, which is good,
but it only moves a few inches per click of the button.
So it takes a while to get in the hangar. The spool
is pretty small too, so unrolling the cable to hook
it up isn't so fun. The winch isn't super bad, but
it isn't really as nice as a good quality pro winch
either. So while I like it for occasional use, I'd
recommend either a power tow of some sort, or a better
winch if you use it a lot. In the winter, I'm not
sure how a power tow would work for me. I'm sure if
they make them with spike tires they'd work though,
but hopefully not tear up the pavement. The winch
works best for winter I'd think, because when I need
it, it's because the snow plow left slush or ice in
front of my hangar and you can't even walk. There
the winch is priceless.
