The only way to convert a 540 is to send it to the factory for a reman/exchange, but it will be in a certified conversion and you probably have to have the original data plate and engine logs. They have not made field overhaul kits available. I understand there is one engine shop that is machining cases for roller tappets, but it is not us, and I believe you may have to have a specific case set to do the conversion. Lycoming use to not sell their roller tappets for after market. (You use to have to return any LRT tappets for an exchange on new ones.) They may have changed their position on that issue. More importantly, are you definitely set that you want to do the conversion? What benefit are you seeking? Rhonda Barrett-Bewley Barrett Precision Engines 2870-B N. Sheridan Rd. The lobe profile for a roller cam is entirely different then a flat tappet cam lobe profile. While the case is split the machining can be done.. do not archive Ben Haas N801BH www.haaspowerair.com ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Kelly McMullen Subject: Re: RV10-List: Re: Is it possible to convert a conventional tappet IO-540 C4D5 Superior pre bankruptcy made a roller tappet that could be retrofitted. The lycoming tappet cannot without significant machining of case. I don't know what is available from Superior now. The old school ones are much cheaper and only have to be inspected in a strike, or so I was told. -------- Myron Nelson Mesa, AZ Emp completed, QB wings completed, legacy build fuse in mostly done, finishing kit in progress. I didn't think of the "tiebreaker" scenario. -Rob On Wed, May 9, 2012 at 2:49 PM, Rene Felker wrote: > Being stupid and running out of gas=85..that is after I ignore the two ot her > warnings I would have received by then.
