Bill,
Just another option since you don't have the tools to cut the antenna lead and
re-terminate it with a BNC.
You could Fedx the radio to Garmin for an expedited repair. They are in Kansas
City. Assuming they could repair the radio, you could limp/fly there on the
way home and pick it up, or if you have time, have them Fedx it back. It probably
would take a week for all that if you are lucky.
At this point you don't really know that the antenna hasn't failed and the radio
is good. Remember, there is a BNC connector at the antenna end. Assuming you
can get to that, you also could go to Radio Shack and get several double female
connectors and several 6 foot BNC to BNC pre-fabricated jumpers and hook
the 430 up without cutting any wires. If you can't get a jumper and a barrel
connectors, I could send them to you, just let me know how long the jumper needs
to be.
