I do the same. I have a local AP/IA do the firewall forward inspection....he will be doing the mags this year. As much as I want to learn and do it all myself, I feel much better that I have a person who has done 100's of mags doing mine instead of me doing my first one and then loading the family in the plane. Plan ahead. Consider what could happen and how you will react. I built my plane and am familiar and confident in checking the airframe, but I always have a mechanic check out my engine at annual and - guess what! He found a nut missing on my alternator this year that I did not see! Was that the best $200 spent, and the best second set of eyes ever! Also, never depart from proper maintenance procedures unless you have checked with a VERY reliable AP/IA. Humility is your friend.....overconfidence your enemy. Subject: Autoparts alternator as a spare
I posted this on VAF but not much yet. http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=124714 Basiclly, I am impressed that someone carried a spare alternator with him on a trip. Talk about being prepared. However, it does seem like a good idea to know if such an option exists for the -10. Does anyone know if there is an equivalent auto parts alternator that will work for us? Thus, we can either carry around a cheap spare or know what to look for at a local auto parts store, even better. This would be a backup to the stock Plane Power alternator. Does anyone know of the closest direct replacement? From the limited searching i have done online, the mounting bosses dont seem to be the same.
