Subject: | Autoparts alternator as a spare |
It fits the Van=99s alternator boss mount =93 which I
believe is the same (or close) to the Plane Power mount. The connection
plug for sensing voltage and alt light (if used) may be different but
that is not a big issue for a field repair.
If you ever need to do this take the failed Plane Power unit to the auto
store to make sure =93 you=99ll need it to swap pulleys
anyway. Many stock car alternators have this same form factor. On the
RV-8A I first went to a alternator shop and had a
=9Cspecial=9D one made (this was before Plane Power). It
lasted 50 hours. I replaced it with this off the shelf part and it
lasted 10 years. It failed gradually with the voltage regulator
sometimes needing a load applied before it started working correctly.
The replacement Plane Power has been flawless on the RV-8A and well as
the RV-10.
BTW =93 I found the alt light connection to be useful as a
=9Cyou left the ignition on=9D alert. I use a DPDT switch
for each ignition, ignition on one side and a 12vdc buzzer from Radio
Shack on the other (buzzer(s) mounted on the engine side of the firewall
but still heard in the plane with headphones on ). The buzzer(s) ground
provided by the alternator light connection. Thus if the engine is not
running but the ignition switch is on, the buzzer sounds. Once the
engine is running the alternator ground goes to buss voltage so there is
no voltage across the buzzer and it is silent.

Would that be a direct bolt on replacement if the Plane Power quit while
away from home?

This is the one I used before replacing with a plane power. It works
well
for 10 years:
Mitsubishi 60 -70 amp, internal regulator, internal fan. Various makes
are
suitable. Model used listed under 1990 Mazda 626, 2.2L, L4, Fuel
injected.
Available at
Advance Auto parts for $95, as well as most auto stores. It comes with
a
spline pulley so you will need the auto parts store to replace it with
the
pulley off of your old alternator.

I posted this on VAF but not much yet.

Basiclly, I am impressed that someone carried a spare alternator with
him on
a trip. Talk about being prepared. However, it does seem like a good
idea to
know if such an option exists for the -10. Does anyone know if there is
an
equivalent auto parts alternator that will work for us?
Thus, we can either carry around a cheap spare or know what to look for
at a
local auto parts store, even better. This would be a backup to the stock
Plane Power alternator. Does anyone know of the closest direct
replacement?

I managed only 79 hours on my auto alternator when it gave out on a cross c
ountry flight. It was an internal regulated Nippondenso for a 1978 Suzuki S
amurai. It was a factory new unit, not a rebuild. I had a blast tube on the
back to keep the regulator and diodes cool. The alternator indicated an in
ternal ground fault when they tested it at Advance Auto. I bit the bullet a
nd replaced it with a B&C alternator with external voltage regulator.

Subject: | Re: Control stick bending |
After action report.
I had access to a 55 ton hydraulic press. It took some effort to create
fixtures to securely hold the stick so it wouldn't go flying out of the
press. The stick as delivered from Van's had approx 10 3/4" diameter
between inside surfaces. Packed stick with sand. Went slowly with first
one. Discovered needed 3/4" of compression before getting any permanent
bend. Compressed it to slightly under 9" measurement, which after release
of pressure gave a 9 3/4" dimension. That was just right, as I could see
the tubing just beginning to slightly deform. Second stick came out within
1/8" dimension of first. Now have full up and down travel on elevator
without stick grip hitting panel, although knuckles might get a little
bruising if really need full nose down. Back to working on the 90% of
remaining 5% or something like that.
