All,
Some good discussions of late on fuel vent modifications to mitigate icing.
Attached photos is what I back fitted today. The 3/8" piece of aluminum
tubing out in the breeze has a piece of aluminum screen material epoxied
over an angle cut to be the barrier for mud dabbers and such. The down side
is I suspect this would present a nice place for ice to build up. I added a
'T' in the vent line and added a check valve such that if the external vent
opening becomes blocked the tank sucks air from the wing root area - that
area would be free of ice. With the check valve the vent still provides a
positive pressure on the tank when flying, and if gas does burp out (as
typical after filling and the sun heats the tank) the gas is still directed
out of the wing.
The check valve opens easily with just a slight vacuum. We got these valves
from McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#5492k11/=107mk5o

Hi
Since I have Paul Grimstad rudder pedals I wasn't sure if the "standard" options
would work for me.
What I ended up doing was installing an eye bolt in an open AN3 hole in the u channel
at the base of the firewall. I use that as an anchor point through which
a bungee cord is used to pull both pedals forward. The end of the bungee is
secured to one of the gear legs arms that is in the corner of the foot well.
I used this at KOSH and it seems to have worked quite well. I especially like that
the bungee has some "give". I found one bungee was too loose but two held
a nice tension.
For the elevators I just use another bungee wrapped around the seat to hold the
stick back
See the pix below.
Cheers
Les

Subject: | Where to insulate |
Hi
During my annual I decided to put *some* insulation in my -10 while the interior
was removed. I have insulated the forward sidewalls, the lower half of the firewall
and the tunnel floor. All of the insulation is easily removed for inspection.
I do have limited access behind the panel and am wondering if there is any advantage
to insulating the areas I can access.
Any comments?
Merry Christmas!
Les

What did you insulate with and how did you attach to firewall?

Hi
I used 1/2" thick fiber based insulation I had on hand (bought from a car upholstery
shop). It has a thin foil coating in either side. I sealed the edges using
1.75" aluminum tape. Cut slightly oversize, it has a bit of a pressure fit.
The tape also provides some rigidity. I also used some aluminum tape to hold
it in place on each of the sides on the firewall.
I did not use and adhesive or contact cement.
It will be interesting to see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't, it is easily
removed.
Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah!

A much easier solution is to drill a small (#40) hole in the back side
of the vent about half way up to the wing.

thanks Les. I really didn't want to use an adhesive either. I think I'll follow
your lead.
