Subject: | Built-in Stratux? |
Got my -10 upgraded to ADS-B out (GNS480+GTX330ES) and also built the
Stratux ADS-B + wifi unit, and like it enough that I think I will just build
it into the plane. Thinking about mounting the Rasberry Pi in the tunnel
behind the rear seats and routing the antennas (have dual band) to somewhere
on the inside sidewall behind the rear windows.
Has anybody done a similar thing and have design ideas?

All sounds good until antennas. You need a transponder type antenna for
the receiver. It can serve both 978 and 1090. Like any other antenna it
needs to be external, and for reception of ground stations on the bottom
of fuselage. If you have a diversity capability (not likely) you would
also mount an antenna on top of fuselage to pick up signals from
aircraft above you. In any case, side wall mounting would be less than
optimal.

While external antennas are almost always best, internal ones are often good enough
- especially for receiving, where the important figure of merit is usually
signal to noise ratio, not sensitivity.
I have a SkyRadar D2 ADSB receiver mounted on the right sidewall (behind a kick
panel just right of the copilot's right knee). Two antennas, glued to the forward
side of the front door posts, about eye level. Coax back to the receiver,
USB to the GRT Hx, wireless to the iPad (you can use both at the same time).
I typically get 5 to 7 ground stations in flight, have never seen none. (I do
get none on the ground, depends on the airport).

Dan;
I setup mine with the USB connected under the seats into a 12v adaptor, the
wires run up below and behind the seat and connect to the Pi in the baggage
area. The antenna is then run to the back window and velcroed upside down. I
have done a couple of flights with it and get about 6-7 stations
consistently. Traffic is there and the weather is always updated within 2
minutes or less. I suggest putting the Stratux in a place easy to reach as
its a project in development that will have numerous updates to the SD card
and hence be harder to reach in the tunnel. Consider putting it behind the
seats on the aluminum bar that holds up the seats instead.

I think I did see one of this design (PVC) fail at OSH this year. There was
quite a thunderstorm /windstorm that came through Friday night before the
show. I think the PVC snapped on the long part.

Here is my $15 solution that has worked for 3 years without fail.

I have a destroyed rudder in my shop from a failed pvc gust lock. For short stops
in non-stormy conditions, they may be fine, but please please please don't
trust them over a weekend or any time there are going to be relatively high winds.
