HI
Does anyone know the genesis for this SB? It seems like something that the average
annual inspection might not catch.
Cheers

The most nagging thing about this SB is:
1) There have been no cracks found in the RV-10, per the SB.
2) Aileron removal is needed to inspect the RV-10.
3) If nothing is found, then put it all together again and take it all apart
next year.
4) The icing on the cake is this one:
NOTE: Completion of the modifications in this service bulletin as a preventa
tive measure (prior to cracks being detected) on wings that have been fully a
ssembled is not recommended
Finding cracks may be a good thing so you can at least close out the inspect
ion cycle instead of taking it apart over and over again until you find some
thing.
I wish they'd just give us a preventative fix that could be inspected in the
future without removal.

I would guess that if you use appropriate gust locks and avoid extreme use o
f the ailerons(e.g rolls), you're not likely to get cracks...

Subject: | Re: Saervice Bulletin |
Hey guys
I just got back from the airport. We have a trip planned for tomorrow and I
wanted to get this done before we leave. I found no cracks. I DO have a tip
that should address some of of these concerns.
I did NOT fully remove the ailerons. I DID disconnect the push rod control.
when you do that, with the flaps full down you can prop the other aileron
full up, and that gives you enough room to get a dremel or drill into cut
off the gap seal covering the 2 rivets you can't see otherwise. One one
side I used a Dremel cut off disc and then cleaned it up with a burr, On
the other side I used a #27 drill and cleaned it up with a burr. Seemed the
same both ways, The trickiest part is removing and replacing the screw/bolt
and nut/washers. There's not a lot of room for fingers Going SLOW and fuel
lube to help hold things in place worked wonders. Total time for both sides
was 1:45 mins and most of you should know that I'm NOT the fastest wrench
around. With the gap seal trimmed, subsequent inspections should be 30 mins
or less.

I'm guessing they want it done before the next flight so they can get an ide
a of how many people of various models are going to have this problem. Once
we have maybe 100 Rv10's report back, you should have a good idea if it'll b
e an issue or not. Tim

Harbor Freight has an inspection camera with a 8.5mm camera for $79.99
($169.99 with recording ability). Might be a good time to break down and
get one. Might be cheaper options, this is just the first place I
looked.

That one is slightly different than the harbor freight one I got a few years
back. I paid about the same. It turned out to be a waste. The head was to
o large to do anything useful for cylinder inspections, and the resolution w
as so poor it was hard to see much detail. If you buy it, make sure it's re
turnable. I hope some day I run across a good one that doesn't break the ba

A low cost alternative that a few pilots have used is an endoscope of 7mm
with six LEDs and connects to smart phones by mini USB. Get one with Hook,
90 degree and 45 degree mirrors. www.banggood.com. They come in lengths
from 2 meters to 5 meters. Just an idea.

I think I have the same on from Harbor Freight that Tim is talking about. I bought
it several years ago and it has been of limited use to me. This one that Marcus
mentioned seems to have pretty good customer reviews.
Deems, thanks for your tips. Sounds like a MUCH easier way to comply. BTW, I just
got my airplane out of the paint shop on Wednesday and reinstalled the ailerons,
only to get home and find this SB! grrrr..... :x

I bought one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/AbleScope-VA-400-Borescope-Endoscope-Articulating/dp/B00GY7C9ZW?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00
Hooked up to my laptop I can take photos or video. The articulating head
is the primary attraction. Insert in cylinder, bend head 180 degrees to
look at valves. Bend 90 to look at cylinder walls.

Another Amazon option, not as elegant, but a whole lot cheaper: http://www.amazon.com/Crenova-Megapixel-Endoscope-Waterproof-Inspection/dp/B016KUGVJC/ref=pd_cp_421_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=05FC7G26DFW7MQCD39QA
Seems like it might just work.

Kelly, that looks like an excellent value, as others I've spent for
several tries some money with just being disappointed, this gives clear
pictures with all the details and the bending head is great. Sure, I
could try another 6-7 of the cheap once but I rather have one working
and pay a bit more.
Cheers Werner
