I have used both the stock push/pull and quadrant cables in at least 15-20 FWF
installs and they work. Some argue that some could stand to be a little longer,
especially for the quadrant, I think mainly the prop cable, but I don't remember
the details. Stock will work, though.

Cable length will depend on whether you stick strictly to the plans,
whether you use a custom instrument panel, and whether you use stock
Lycoming ignition and fuel injection or carburetor. Since you are using
non stock fuel injection and prop governor, you will need to verify
whether those items change the cable hook ups in any way. Items such as
air conditioning compressor or different routing of the cables can
affect length.
I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but the prototype Vans
built used a narrow deck engine, and any new engine as well as a
majority of overhauled engines you can buy will be wide deck.
Some have had difficulty in use with stock cables because of
engine/exhaust heat. Several vendors offer cables with higher heat
resistance with teflon lining.

For push/pull controls the mixture and prop cables work. The
Van=99s recommended 47.5=9D throttle cable will, if pulled
tight against the bottom of the engine, just fit.
A better option for the throttle cable is to get the 50.5=9D cable
Van=99s sells for the RV-7. That is what I=99m using.

Hey list,
Are Van's stock control cables the correct length or are custom lengths
required?
The FF setup is C4B5, Airflow FM-150A, PCU5000X, and firewall
penetrations in the factory locations.
Thanks,

I'll add that if you get custom cables made for your chosen routes, only order
1 first and make all your learning curve advancements on the 1st cable and not
all 3 (or more) at the same time.
You'll save so much money in the long term it's not even funny. I've bought about
5 cables now and had 3 of those modified. I've wasted more than a grand
trying to get the cables right.
Just order one and learn your lessons on it. Then order the other 2.

Strictly a stock build. Mine fit but were tight, I needed to go as direct as possible,
not exactly per plans.

That sounds pretty expensive...
My cables for the -14 are slightly shorter but they only cost me $70 each.
What I did find was very helpful was that I used my old RV-14
cables that had gotten stiff and ruined from heat and time,
and used one of those to mock up the lengths.
If there is another RV-10 builder who has an old cable around,
maybe they can be talked into sending it to you if you get
custom cables. I'd offer mine, but I already have the
offer open to other RV-14 builders who may need them to
get a quadrant installed. Van's in their lack of
execution on the RV-14, hasn't yet even begun offer
a quadrant on the RV-14, or even assistance in getting
one installed. So mine is a D-I-Y install and I'm trying
to help others who want the same thing.
All in all, I do think Phil gave great advice...order one
cable, the longest one, first, if you're going to try
anything custom. But if you can borrow an old cable
from someone, that would save you the headache.

I went with the McFarlane cables using the hi-temp sleeves. $250/each.
And if they need to be modified its between $100-$150 depending on the modification
requested.
Painful to experience.

David,
My quadrant cables are coming out this week for replacement for higher temp versions.
If you want one or all for measurement purposes you're welcome to have
them. They are longer than the standard lengths Van's gives you, because I have
my quadrant on the center console behind the fuel selector.

I'm getting them from www.push-pull.com but local CableCraft suppliers should be able to do it. If you have one of those in Australia it might make it easier for you.
The model number is 176-VTT-2-57, where 2 is the throw, 57 is the length.
