I poke a hole in the top of the filter as mentioned by others, then place a disposable baby diaper under the filter before removing it. It catches any spill. I haven't spilled a drop in several years of using this method. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=456991#456991
