I=99ve not tried the pipe trick yet as I=99ve always been
able to jack up the wing. But it just occurred to me a tire iron would
probably also work and since folks are probably needing to borrow the
scissor jack if an off base repair is needed, you can probably find a
tire iron as well.

I was tempted to try that this weekend. One of the big things that
stopped me was the fact that then I would not know the cause of the
failure or how bad it was. In my case it may have worked. Also, I
didn't have the ability to roll the tire to distribute it
easily...unless i taxied the plane around for a while. The tube held
air for about 5-10 minutes before deflating. I just figure the real
prudent thing to do is never depart with a known issue. If you fix it
or even just do a field fix that you know will work, you can leave
feeling much better about it.

Good timing on this post. I've serviced wheels as part of annual this past weekend.
I'd not balanced the wheels in the past and all three required balancing.
One less mystery causing occasional shimmy during landings. I was unable to split
the wheels to rotate main tires. Tim mentioned using a bead breaker but I
don't recall using one last time when I was able to get the two sides apart.
What do others do to split their wheels?
Cheers,
Jay

Subject: | Re: Prop Governor Alternative |
Good Afternoon Myron
Well after flying 32 hours behind my re-worked IO-540, the new MT governor
and my Hartzel prop, I have realized I mis-read the prop manual and my prop
does indeed need to be further evaluated, something Hartzel is doing at
present. It just keeps getting better and better (tongue in cheek).
I believe I saw a post that you stated your insurance co, (AIG?) was going
to cover your engine and prop inspection etc. Am I correct? It may have
been someone else?
My insurance broker here in Ontario which is underwritten by AIG Canada said
there was no basis for a claim. However if AIG is covering things in the
US, then they should also do it here. Can you give me any details so I have
some ammo to attempt negotiate with my broker?
It would be nice if the insurance companies would go after MT for damages,
as I figure as individuals we have little chance of succeeding.
Anyway any info is greatly appreciated.
Regards, Rick

Don't give up Rick. Keep meticulous records. Hopefully MT steps up for
everyone.

If you talc the rims and the tire bead the bead will come off with
ease. Standing on the tire might work but if they're relly stuck, (and
I hate this but it works) insert a large screwdriver between the tire
bead and the wheel rim. Pry towards the tire or you might pry a chunk
out of the wheel rim. I also have a large vise that I can put the tire
in to squeeze the beads together. Whatever works for you. Prevention
with the talc is the best method I use.

The beads can get very stuck. I have had times when I could stand on the tire
and pop it but after a couple of rough ones I looked at bead breakers online and
then built one. I used it in Michigan...yesterday the bead was stuck pretty
well.

For my tractor I have had to drive onto the tire with another tractor to
break the bead. Works well.
