Gives a nice finished look to the seat back cause it carries the fabric or whatever right over the back and out of sight. Also on the RV6 and maybe others there was a strip the slot would fit into and stop the seat backs flopping forward, most builders ( that I know) not saying its the right thing to do, didnt fit that strip cause sometimes its handy to be able to pull the seat back forward a bit to gain access to the baggage compartment. Probably the seat back design has continued cause its just a standard part interchangable through the models .
