Just for info......After 400hrs I had to repair/replace the fuel/overprime drain in the bottom of the Fab Box. While the Fab Box was off I decided to remodel the Alternate Engine Air. The original round slider door setup was removed and a round plate was riveted and epoxied on the inside, so now no depression in the Box. Had already fitted an aluminium plate on the bottom so solid rivets from the bottom through the inside round plate. At the rear of the Fab Box through a 2inch hole a shut off valve (Spruce 08-07627) has been pushed in so it is just short of the air filter and epoxied in. The valve is just under the aluminium Fab top plate so a couple of rivets could be fitted so everything is fitted and firm while the epoxy is applied. The original operating cable is used to operate the now spring loaded shut off butterfly valve. The cable was shortened about six inches. Although the 2inch valve is much smaller than the normal inlet, turns out its bigger than the throttle body inlet on the normal Vans vertical induction. On a ground run With the normal inlet blocked off and the new 2inch inlet opened the engine makes takeoff power in both RPM & MP. So now.pros.... a nice operating alternate air door that can be opened and shut without any reclosing issues, not on the bottom to encourage fuel leakage, no potential unfiltered dirt ingress from bad sealing slider, a good air seal. Cons, not a direct unfiltered air supply because air is drawn through the side of the filter. Does take care of the plastic bag blocking the inlet completely or the big bird that gets through the prop and does the same. Would be OK to if the same birds feathers completely blocked the filter cause the valve body is right up close against the filter. If ice or snow gets in and blocks the filter completely then its curtains. So anyway just an idea that others maybe interested in.
