Subject: | Garmin Yaw Damper? |
Is anyone out there sorry they got a yaw damper for their Garmin
autopilot? I survived without for a long time but I'm considering one
now. If there are comments, pro or con, I'd like to hear them.

Im looking to add one too..... But it appears TruTrak is no longer making them?
I need call around and get the real story.
Ideally Im looking to run the YD independent of the AP so I can keep it on while
hand flying around too.
Ive had a sick little girl in the back seat a couple too many times. Hopefully
I can find a way to make it easier on her and keep her experience from going
down the tubes before she gets much older.

We're switching to a G3X. That's another thread but since it would include
the AP, I'm considering the yaw damp option as well. The Garmin mounting
solution looks pretty easy, even as a retrofit, so it's now or never. Just
wondering if anyone has a great reason to add it, or not.

I can't comment on the Garmin product. I chose to retrofit a yaw damper to
my Dynon autopilot. Definitely nice to let Otto keep the ball centered.
The mount would be a little easier to install before the tailcone is closed
up. There was a discussion awhile back about using Van's mounting and seems
like you could either use Dynon or Vans part instead of Garmin for some
money saving. Search archives circa summer/fall of 2017, either here or VAF
.

Dave,
I don't think you need to think of it as now or never. I know the Dynon
equivalent can be added anytime you choose, as I installed mine about 3 yrs
after first flight. Just had to update configuration in the network and
system activated those items in the menu. Once I got the calibration close
to what others found worked, it was very nice. I expect the Garmin version
would be very much the same. It takes some load off flying in light
turbulence, and if you have back seat pax, I'm sure they would appreciate
it. The Dynon system lets you put in independent switch to turn YD on or
off separately from the AP. I expect you can do same with Garmin.
