Anyone had any problems with the steps on the 10? After about 1400 hours
and 12 years, the step folded downward as I began to enter the aircraft.
Initial examination revealed 1/2 a bead across the top of the step, we will
attempt to determine whether corrosion played a part. Upon examination of
the new part the weld bead covers the entire top of the step but by visual
inspection of the new part we found a size 40 hole in the internal section
of the parts which could allow moisture into the step area. Other builders
may want to examine the area between the step and the vertical attach piece
for a good weld bead. We had no steppers on the step exceeding 200# and the
estimated usage is about 2000 times usage. BTW, there is no plan provision
to access the bolt that holds the step in place; therefore it is left to
the builder to provide access or plan to cut a hole later if required..

When I was building mine, which only has 100 hours on it so far, one of the steps
had a poor weld joint across the top where it joins the horizontal tube that
goes in the fuselage. This was discovered when I was cleaning up the weld to
get them chromed. A friend repairs it with a Tig welder and I put flush inspection
covers in the baggage area so I could install new ones it it was ever necessary.
A friends late model steps were made of stainless steel so he just got
them polished.

Are you saying that Vans now makes the steps from Stainless, or is there
another source?

He ones my friend got were from Vans quite recently and the chrome shop iden
tified the material as stainless steel and said they could not chrome them. T
hey polished them. They were painted with some grey primer before we cleaned
them up. I have no idea how long that has been going on.

Subject: | Motopod, cargo pod? |
Hi list,
Does anyone have experience with the Motopod cargo pod? If so, what is
your take?
Also, I'd be very interested to hear if anyone has retrofitted one onto a
flying airplane and how easy/hard that was.
Thanks,
David
