The vendors seem to tout the XLT version over the LS version which came with my 540? I chose the B&C starter and alternators because I know th at they will always rebuild whatever they have built. The LS and XLT are for 4 cylinder engines and should not be used on a 6 cylinder. The correct starter in the Skytec brand is the 149-12-NL, which for whatever reason can be bought for $25-50 bucks less. Never had a problem with a starter they rebuilt. I guess Hartzell doesn't want to be in the rebuild business. It would seem any electric shop could reverse engineer it and apply for a PMA approval. It isn't like there is any exotic technology. Incredible how Hartzell raised the prices by about $150 for Skytec units, and $300 for the Kelly Electric design starters.
