Joe
I think 4 feet is too wide -- it's too hard to reach across. I'm happy
with the 3' X 8' overall top surface dimensions for my RV-8A project
table. Two smaller tables are handier than one large one so build
another (later) if you underestimate your needs.
I (along with many builders over the years) built a "standard EAA
Chapter 1000 workbench". I don't think you can go wrong with it and all
the details are already worked out for you. Click on the "Work Table
Plans" link near the top of this page to see the details.

As I mentioned, I modified the dimensions to make mine 3' X 8'
(including overhang). I also made a couple of modifications (suggested
to me by others) that I'm very pleased with:
1. Allow enough overhang of the table top surface on all sides to allow
for clamping.
2. Put the table on casters (locking preferred) so it can be moved.
Even if you have a fixed location for it, sooner or later it'll need to
be moved and the thing is HEAVY!
Best Regards,
Joe
