--> RV3-List message posted by: "Larry West" <TAILSKIDWEST@peoplepc.com> OK, its time to bring up the wing mod again! I bought an RV-3 last spring and am doing the condition inspection on it now. I know CN-2-II was not done (have a new kit from Van's), but don't know about CN-1. Can anyone let me know what to look for to tell if the wing root/rear spar has been modified? Thanks!! --> RV3-List message posted by: Jim Oke <wjoke@shaw.ca> Larry; As you have gathered, CN-1 for the RV-3 involved two aspects, reinforcement of the root rib the wing and improving the aft spar pick-up point. There were three methods offered for reinforcing the root rib, the builder being expected to choose one depending on stage of completion, etc. 1) add a .032 rib to the inside of the root rib and rivet it in pace with AN470-4 rivets, in effect put a double rib at the root position. 2) add a pair of 1" x 1/8" 2024 bars running fore and aft alongside and riveted to the root rib and also picking up the fore and aft rib-to-spar attachment angles. 3) add a pair of 3/4x34/x.063 6061 angles bent to fit the top and bottom curves of the airfoil shape to the outboard side of the root ribs (on left wing the top bar is shown on the inboard side due to the wing walk stiffeners); three vertical 3/4x3/5x .063 were supposed to be added to the inboard sides of the ribs to tie everything together. I used method #2 on my -3. You will have to have a look at the root ribs somehow to see what has been done to your -3. This will be a bit trickey as the RV-3 butts the top skin right up to the fuselage vice using a gap cover in this area. At the rear spar, a spacer and doubler were to be added to the front face of the aft spar web so that the aft spar bolt would be in double shear at the aft spar carry through vice in single shear as per the original design. Dropping the flap down and looking for a pattern of 6 AN470 rivet heads outboard of the aft rib-spar reinforcement angle rivets would indicate if this has been done to your aircraft.
