Randy, What ended up happening with your 8 after the incident, insurance pay it
off? Glad to hear you have the bug again, I know of a very nice RV3A for sale
for 15K, 0-290G no electrical system in VA...
see ya!

The conversion was MAJOR surgery. Removing the bulkhead that holds the old
wing and installing the new bulkhead and center section was something WAY
beyond my skills. Wally Anderson at Synergy Air in Eugene, OR, did way more
than assist me (actually, I assisted him).
We did many other upgrades at the same time.

How did the wing conversion go? Does it turn out to be major surgery or is
it pretty straight forward?

I bought a flying RV3 with a listed GW of 1175, with an empty weight of 790.
Just finished the conversion to the 3B wing (quickbuild). Haven't flown
much in the past 6 weeks (business travel and trying to track down an oil
leak).
My "3" has an O320-E2D and Catto 3-blade.
Would like to participate in a "registry".
Located North of San Francisco.

Having admired the RV-3 for many years now, but having built an RV-8, I am
finally about to take the plunge and order an RV-3 kit. My RV-8 is now gone
and it's time for another project. I'm now in the "due diligence" phase and
have a few questions for you RV-3 guys...
1) What gross weight are you using? The Van's number of 1100 lbs with a 775
lb empty weight leaves a useful load of 330 lbs. Then deducting 180 lbs for
30 gallons of fuel only leaves 150 lbs for the pilot & gear. I'm not a big
guy, but I do weigh 170 with clothes on. I'm guessing many RV-3s are being
flown at 1200 lbs when full up. Please let me know what your empty weights
and gross weights are.
2) I am thinking of putting up an RV-3 web site -- would you guys find a
"registry" listing all builders/owners who wish to be listed, and a few
pertinent facts about each such as power train, empty weights, etc., useful?

I've settled up with the insurance company, who was very fair by the way
(VanGuard program through NationAir), and am in the process of either
selling the plane as is and starting an RV-3, or rebuilding it and
incorporating some changes while I'm at it. One of the people interested in
buying it before the incident is very interested in buying it as is and will
be inspecting it again tomorrow. Should know if he's buying it by next week.
If he doesn't buy it I may send a message around offering it for sale as it.
Many options, still thinking and getting counsel from all my local RV pals.
Thanks the the heads up on the RV-3A, but being able to have it exactly the
way you want it would force me to build my own. If I build an RV-3B it would
be a tweaked O-320, probably fuel injected, with LASAR ignition, and a Whirl
Wind 151 c/s prop.

Let me know what happens, I might be interested as well. On another subject, when
you were prop testing the WW, did they have an extended hub for guys with long
RV cowls like most older RV4's/3's?

WW doesn't offer an extended hub. No worries, just put a new cowl on -- the
cowls Van's is presently shipping are the newer S-cowl for both the RV-3 and
RV-4.
