I'm currently running a Catto 3-blade on my RV3 w/ O320. I too put the
Prop-Guard tape on, but ran it 2/3 of the way down to the hub.
I had Craig Catto install it for me, so I have no experience of the prop
performance without the tape.
Any thoughts or observations on performance degradation with the tape?

I currently have flown FIVE props on my RV4 and like Jim Ayers said, "you
could have bought a great Constant Speed prop for what you spent". I have
sold almost all of them but one thing remained constant, ALL were small guys
making a product. Here are some names that you can count on, ALL make great
props as well.
Ed Sterba, Gary Hertzler, Craig Catto and Margie Warnke (Bernie's daughter,
no longer in business)
I am currently running a Catto and he like Cloudcars is a garage business
making a wonderful product. One thing to keep in mind for you" left
coasters", wood props are awesome if you don't have to fly through rain or
have humidity, something abundant in the SE USA. Back here in FL, it's metal
props have no fear in humidity and rain, a plus for the sensy. .However, I
have put a thin edge of "propguard tape"(www.propguard.com) on the last 6
inches of my Catto prop and that keeps the rain erosion away. I would go
with a Cloudcars prop, remember that Hartzell and McCauley still have prop
failures and they are big boys, but they haven't always been. Amen Chuck....
PS: How's my old Sterba prop doing?

Ron,
I replaced my Propguard earlier this year after 2 years of use.(mineral spirits
cleans the glue off well) While I had it off I flew the RV on a smooth sunny
day for good comparisons. With the tape off, my RPM/MP split was closer by 1".
In other words, at 170 MPH at 1500 AGL "tape off"(naked) I was 24 squared,
exactly. Tape on, 23.5"/2490. Max RPM actually increased with the tape, but by
only 50 rpm (2700 vs 2750), so very little degradation. However, I reduced the
amount of blade coverage with the tape by 50% this time and noticed almost
no difference after testing. Before propguard I noticed only the tips getting
rain and rock damage, hence I only covered the last 6" with tape.
I flew through a rainshower enroute to work this morning at 2600 RPM, not a scratch.
The protection outweighs the small performance loss in my humble opinion....

The two blade Warnke prop I had on the Lycoming O-290 had a urethane leading
edge that worked very well in the rain. (The rain found me three times on the
trip to Oshkosh in 1990. As I recall, it didn't even damage the finish
behind the leading edge.)
A friend had another brand 2 blade fixed pitch wood prop with the a urethane
leading edge, except the leading edge was also clear coated. In the rain, the
clear coating chipped off of the leading edge. (For a variety of reasons,
that propeller company is not in business any more. So there doesn't seem to be
a need to name names.)
My RV-3 now has wood blades on the 3 blade propeller. Each blade has a
stainless steel leading edge.
It passed the rain and ICE impact tests required for certified propellers.
It is an electric 3 blade Constant Speed propeller with wood blades from MT
Propeller.
My best time from brake release (40' MSL) to 10,000' AGL is 9 minutes 16
Seconds. That's with full fuel and me flying it. The propeller works well for
the 140 hp engine and the 300# pilot. (It would definitely climb better with a
"normal weight" pilot.)
