No worries Jim!
My airboat engine shop friend has one technician who specializes in mags. The
Airboaters pretty much use the Lyc IO-540 explicitly now and a fully composite
sensenich adjustable pitch 3 blade carbon fiber airboat prop. They run the
big bendix mags with all new aftermarket coils, points and rotors. Denso spark
plugs are the most popular and I am running a set in my RV4 on the Rose ignition.
The serious racing airboat guys utilize the old Bendix "high altitude" sealed
mags with a much bigger spark or an electronic ignition similar to my Jeff
Rose.
The neatest by-product of living in airboat country besides getting a very
reasonably priced like-new 0-320 is 100LL availablity. You can buy it at a local
Citgo station for "way" below airport prices. ($2.85 this morning).
Bring plenty of 5 gallon jugs...See ya!

Thanks Rob -
What started this was me shooting off my mouth about what a great A&P my cousin
is and I would see if he wanted to do this part time (he's retired) for the listers.
He is a good A&P, but he is only concerned about the engines that are
to stay certified. He doesn't want to be involved in the litigation arising from
a crash. Generally the estate (if there is a fatality) will sue everyone the
blood-sucking lawyers can think of (if this offends litigation lawyers it's
o.k. by me). My cousin would rather not be one of the sue-ees (no pun intended
- just worked out that way - lol).

Jim,
First and foremost, certification is only required for "certified" airplanes. Last
I checked the RV3 and rocket are "experimental". You can rebuild your mags
or have them rebuilt by anyone who knows what they are doing as long as it is
used on an experimental application and you keep your engine experimental.
I run one Bendix mag and one Rose electronic ignition. My mag was rebuilt by a
reputable airboat engine shop near me who also built my custom 0-320. They used
all new parts and it works better now than ever. There are no yellow tags anywhere
to be found and I like it that way...If you would like one rebuilt, email
me off line.

Hi gang -
Well it looks like a reasonably priced overhaul or rebuild of your mags has gone
down the tubes. You can thank your FAA for that. In order to rebuild and certify
aircraft parts the requirements for a shop are intolerable. My cousin would
do the best job you could pay for but he would have to completely change his
shop setup. The OH shop would have to be contained in it's own separate environment
and all parts would have to have cetification and be kept separate from
any non-certified parts and hardware - this includes screws, washers, etc. I
agree with him that this is too much trouble to go to for a part time activity.
Given the necessary changes, etc. it wouldn't pencil out for the consumer.
He would have to charge the same as any shop. We haven't even addressed the insurance
requirements. Sorry to get your hopes up. On the other hand, if the owner
didn't care about an 8313 or whatever it is, it might be a different story.
