Subject: | RV 4 rear wing spar |
--> RV4-List message posted by: PGLong@aol.com
Hi Experts
My RV 4 wings have the nose and bottom skins riveted on. To mount the
outboard aileron bracket, I have to cut the rear spar off one inch. This is
the one inch extra length for mounting to the jig I think. I don't think the
jig will be needed anymore as one side is completely skinned. Seems like
someone told me not to do this. Am I going to need this one inch extra length
for anything? The wings are now in a roll around cart, in a nose down
position mounted only on the main spar. Am I looking for trouble if I do
this?

Pat,
If I remember right, the tab has to be removed to fit the outboard bracket
onto the corner of the wing.
So, if you are going to finish your skin riviting with the wings mounted in
the jig then you will need the tab. That's how I did mine.
If you are going to skin the tops out of the jig then the tab isn't needed.
You can reach into the wing to buck the bracket rivits even if both skins
are on as long as you have lightening holes in the ribs. It doesn't matter
if you do the bracket before or after the skins. I did it after because it
was easier for me to rivit the top skin while the wing was mounted in the
jig.

If the wing is drilled out and "locked" by the skins then you can trim the
rear spar flush with the rib so you can attach the outboard aileron bracket
Good Luck

You can also reset the jig to grab the newly riveted aileron bracket (which
you riveted after you wacked off the tab).
