Subject: | Harmonic Balancer W&B info for RV-4 |
--> RV4-List message posted by: "Van Artsdalen, Scott" <svanarts@unionsafe.com>
I just installed Landoll's harmonic balancer yesterday on my -4. There
weren't any instructions so I just put it on they way that looked right.
I'm going to try to fly with it either tonight or tomorrow morning. Does
anyone have any weight and balance info for it. I believe it weighs 12 lbs.
Anyone know what the station of the ring gear on a Lycoming is for an RV-4?
PS. I'm going to check the archives now. :-)

I am about to remove a 17 pound starter on my 150 hp O-320 RV-4 and
install one of the
flyweight 8 pound starters. I did not build the airplane and am
wondering if I have any real W&B issues? Is removing 9 pounds from that
location going to cause me concern? I run a 12 pound Warnke prop.

I run a Catto wood prop and have the lightweight starter and alternator. I
haven't noticed any adverse flying conditions on my -4. HOWEVER, I've only
got 6 hours on my plane and I just added a harmonic dampener from Landoll
today. I was worried about carrying passengers without it.

Hi Greg,
Why aren't you doing a weight and balance calculation to determine this for
yourself?

I had two of these in our first RV-4 . The front one made only noise and the
rear one made noise and air to rear seat. I plugged both and installed inlet
air through the firewall.
The noise was so bad I couldn't use the radio at high cruise before I plugged

I have been on the road for a couple weeks and intend to do that when I
get back home. Was looking for a quick heads up if others have already
been down this road.

> I flew my rv-4 with the SkyTek starter, wood prop, small alternator, O-320
and recently an Odessey 980 battery. In other words, fairly light weight
forward of the spar. My experiences were that it was great flying solo, but
some of my heavier friends (200 lbs.) moved the c.g. so far aft that the
plane was not enjoyable to fly. The c.g.was never out the aft end, but was
darn close and of course the closer it was, the lighter the force needed to
change pitch. I recently installed a Landoll solid ring on the flywheel to
smooth out the low rpm idle and move the c.g. forward. I usually detest
adding weight but in this case I think the benefits outweighed (pun
intended) the negative effects that any added weight always produces. I
would suggest you do a weight and balance and know how much aft weight your
plane can safely handle.
