Again my apologies for any inconvenience the disruption may have caused. Best regards, Matt Dralle Matronics Email List Admin. Ed makes a nice, inexpensive prop with decent performance and easily refinish-able with spar varnish. Mine is still flying on Chuck Rabaults RV4. I have gone to a Craig Catto composite www.cattoprops.com with a Margie Warnke "Claw" as a spare. Margie no longer makes props, unfortunately. After installing an electronic ignition on my 0-320 I gained a few HP and the Sterba wasn't enough pitch at 72. My Margie Warnke is a 69X73 and my Catto is a 68X72, both giving me good climb and great cruise. After trying 5 different props on my RV4 including a sensenich metal, I like the two I have now the best. I measure a RV4 prop by MP/RPM split at SL and at 5K. The Sterba had a fairly high split, designed more for climb and would turn almost 2900 in level flight SL. The two props I have now are closely spaced in MP/RPM and I gained 10 knots at cruise over the Sterba and both top out at 2700 RPM. I have been running a 4" extension with 7/16's bolts through the prop and the flange on both with good results, I don't recommend 3/8" since I constantly retightened mine at 3/8 (before changing to 7/16) . Years ago Van himself had a wood prop on the RV4 prototype come loose inflight running 3/8" bolts and he barely got it down on a runway in the CA mtns. Since then, Vans recommends the sensenich metal props and 7/16 bolts on wood props. Good Luck. Rob Ray RV4 1200 hours, 300 upside down... Intermittent connectivity is still a issue although things are better than yesterday. They will probably be doing some intrusive testing on the line later today which will disrupt connections during the test. More information as it becomes available! Thanks for your patience. Hopefully will be sometime this spring. Looking at one made by Ed Sterba. I'm using a Lycoming 0-320, 160 hp. My prop extension, it is 6" diameter and used 3/8" prop bolts and the crush plate is 6" diameter and 3/8" thick. I see Van's doesn't use the 6" diameter prop extension any longer in favor of the 7" diameter. Would anyone recommend changing my hardware at this point to accommodate the newer 7" prop extension diameter and 7/16" bolts rather than the one that came with older kit? Not sure why Van's changed but there must be some issue. Your thoughts would be appreciated. I''m thinking of a 68" X 76" or 78" prop per Ed's recommendations for this RV and engine combination. Not sure which would be best. I don't think I want a cruise or climb prop, just something in-between. Any suggestions? Check with Van's before you buy any of the parts. I ordered the finish kit for my older RV-4 kit and I had already bought the prop and extension, etc. It cost me a bundle to get new extension, bolts, crush plate, etc. I was able to drill the prop for the required 7/16" prop bolts. Apparently they furnish the new cowl for either fixed or C/S prop. Again;call Van's before you invest, Bob Olds A&P , EAA Tech. I ended up drilling both of them to 7/16 after the 3/8 bolts required tightening more than I liked. I keep 2 props bolted on extensions with spinners so I can change props in 30 minutes if I need to. The 7/16 bolts stay torqued longer, even with weather changes. The larger diameter ext seems to have no great advantage or difference over the other, your call. Good Luck. Merry Christmas! (Stuff Cut) Rob Ray RV4 1200 hours, 300 upside down... Hi Rob, After going through five fixed pitch props, had you considered one CS prop? Fixed pitch always gives a low RPM for take off and climb, high RPM for cruise. A Constant Speed prop allows a high RPM for take off and climb, low RPM for cruise. Jim Ayers
