--> RV4-List message posted by: Ron Patterson <scc_ron@yahoo.com>
Hello,
I've been doing alot of reading, but not much posting on these lists. Thought I'd
try getting involved a bit with fellow builders.
I'm writing to see if there are still guys building the RV-4? I just purchased
a new kit and started on it about January 1st, 04. Luckily I have a friend (Mark
Koenig) who is an experienced builder and is helping me (actually I'm helping
him). We're about to finish the empennage and I'm picking up the rest of the
kit next week if all goes well.
No doubt about it, this is the hard way to build an airplane. I now have alot of
respect for the guys that went before me who didn't have the benefit of the
refinements of the later kits (prepunch and quickbuilds). Getting these -3's and
4's to fly safe and straight is a real effort. Semms to me It needs to be a
labor of love or it won't likely come out right.
Recently I was in Missoula MT and had the opportunity of meeting Art Chard at his
shop in Stevensville. I learned alot about the evolution of the RV series and
his part in the design and building of them. Nice man. Built 47 airplanes so
far! Was in the midle of an F-1 when I was there in December.
Seems to me it's too bad Van wouldn't put this kit out in a prepunched version.
I still feel it's his best design. I've spoken to a couple of folks at the factory
and it seems the cost of reverse engineering the kit would be large and
the market for the -3 and -4 pretty small. Wouldn't make a good business decision.
If you have built, or you are currently building a -3 or a -4, drop a note about
your experience. Would be good to hear about 'how they used to do it' and how
some of us are still at it.

Ron, Welcome to the coolest experimental group out there, and yes there are alot of folks building RV4's. You need to go to the RV4 Yahoo group via the Doug Reeves website www.vansairforce.net and join up. Alot of RV4 activity there as well. Despite the 4 being built less, it is still being built and Van still sells 50 kits per year either for RV4 or HRII kits. I have 1100 hours on my RV4 and landings in all lower 48 states, Canada, Mexico the bahamas and Alabama...ha! Van may still be selling alot more side by side trainers (nose draggers) but having flown all the RV's except the 10, the 4 is still the best flyer, except the 3...
You chose wisely...

Hi Ron,
You would think that RV-4's no longer exist by the lack of traffic on this list.
I guess we RV-4 builders are the strong, silent types. <g>
I started in November of '03, and you have already passed me up. It has been real
cold here in Ice Station Pittsburgh, and my garage isn't heated, so I'm in
the slow mode. I hope to pick up the pace soon when the temp gets more civilized.
By the way, if you could tell me how to get in touch with Art Chard I would greatly
appreciate it. I have a question to ask him about a modification he has
done.

I'm here too. I have built two RV-4's. The first was serial number 126 ,
the eigth kit built RV-4 to be flown. I had to drill and ream all the main spar
holes on that one. I had to wait about four months for the wing kit. Van gave
four of us a partial wing kit to keep us off his back until they were ready
to ship. I finished and flew that one in June,1983. Put 700 hours on it.
Just finished the second one in March,2003. Serial number 1191.
Both are 150 HP with wood prop, inverted oil and fuel. The new one now has
vortex generators added. Helps with very-low-speed stability.
You are right,Van hasn't equalled the RV-4 with any of the new
model"Trainers", as Smoky said.

Hi Tim, Keep the faith and keep bangin rivets! You need to try out the Yahoo RV4
group, pretty active bunch of Yahoos...and seems to have alot more builders.
I am fortunate enough to have seven RV4 flying buds who also fly the F16 with
me and one of them bought an awesome RV4 (nicest one I have ever seen) built
by Art Chard. We call it, "a work of art" ha! It has a Bart Lalonde 0-360 with
9.4:1 pistons, RV6 wingtanks (highly recommended) and just plain nice workmanship.
I can hardly wait till Wolfman paints it....me, I still get the grin, even
after 1100 hours in mine.
Just do it!

Hey Tim and Ron,
I guess I finally had to come out of my passive RV4-List monitoring status
on this one. Listen to Rob about keeping the faith. I started my empennage
kit back in January 1996. I'm just now at the systems, wiring, instrument
panel, etc., etc. phase. Its been a long climb on mostly weekends (plus a
year lost building a house) but , in the end, I know what I will have. I
lucked out and found a wing kit that someone had built the spar but no
pre-punched wing skins. All in all, it's been an enjoyable experience and
education. I've got an O-320 engine kit from Bobby Osborn's Planes N' Parts
out of Weatherford, TX. He's been mentioned in past RVators. Real nice
fellow to deal with. I had him supply a constant-speed crankshaft because I
planned to use the Whirlwind 150-series three-blade. So hang in there and
you will have one of the finest airframes to ever grace the sky!
Take care,
Chuck Borne in Southeast Louisiana (no ice here!)
