A buddy and I at work are having a discussion of RVs used on rough and short Idaho
backcountry strips. He says, "I would love an RV-4 but would never take it
into the backcountry."
Any of you happen to have any pics or neat stories about RVs in very challenging
strips (places a little more challenging than Moose Creek, Johnson Creek, etc)?
How do the spring steel gear legs and tailwheel hold up to rough strips?

Hi Joa,
Just so happens I have taken my RV4 to Idaho every summer since 97'. I have landed at Upper and Lower loon, Sulphur Creek, Harris Ranch, Moose Creek, Soldier Bar and Wilson Bar along with Johnson Creek and Big Creek. I keep the wheelpants (old style) on and had no problems at any of them. I designed my wheelpants to get beat up from the gitgo, adding alot of glass to the bottom. The key is to practice landing as slow as you can at home, then looking at the strips you like. I can tell you 80% of them are easy in an RV and the other 20% aren't worth hurting any airplane, much less an RV. I have landed on Mile Hi (not in my 4) and can tell you it's no better camping than Upper Loon. I have attached a photo of my RV4 at Upper Loon.
