I have an 0-290 in my RV-4 and love it. It is not nearly as fast as the
higher hp birds, but it is easy on the gas and does the aerobatics that
I am comfortable with just fine. Lots of rolls and hammerheads, split
esses, a few loops, etc.
Mine cruises at about 140 mph at 65% power and burns a little more than
5 gph. I think the mount is the same as the 0-320, but I didn't build my
RV so can't be sure. Landing approach is 65-70 solo, a bit faster dual,
indicated stall is 50 mph.
The only shortcoming with the lighter engine up front is that passenger
weight and storage are issues. I am 190, and with my 140 lb partner and
30 lbs of baggage behind her seat, the aircraft starts to get very
sensitive in pitch. I installed some straps to hold a small backpack on
top of the battery storage area between my legs to put a bit more weight
forward. I have a wooden (light) prop and no harmonic balancer on the
nose, both contribute to my light nose. It is not a problem solo or with
light passengers.

Okay experts (and the rest of you),
Has anyone ever heard of an RV-4 with an O-290 mounted on the nose?
Will the same conical mount for the O-320 work for the O-290 also? How
does an RV-4 fly (take-off, cruise, aerobatics, landing wise) with less
than 150 HP ? Thanks, in advance, for all replies.
Chuck
